Quest For The Card - Longs Update

This week's Kapalua event is the last chance for players to position themselves in the Top 80 or Top 100 for priority status in 2009.  There were a few changes at Longs from the standings as I presented them two weeks ago.  I've adjusted the Top 80 target up to $140,000 and the Top 100 target up to $104,000.  Here is the latest:

Star-divide

LOCKS:

#75 Heather Young and up.

RELAXED:

#76 Na On Min missed the cut at Longs.  With several players making good progress last week and Min sitting only $2500 ahead of the projected target, I decided to take her out of the LOCK category but believe she will very likely make the Top 80 even if she misses the cut at Kapalua.  Min does have a fallback position - she would qualify as Category 1a because she ranked in the Top 40 of the 2007 money list - so I'm sure she IS rather relaxed about this situation.

APPREHENSIVE:

Russy Gulyanamitta (77) missed the Longs cut and is now $600 shy of the target.  Another missed cut along with similar results from the pursuit could knock Russy out.  Moira Dunn (78 - T43 at Longs) and Wendy Doolan (79 - T23) are about $2000 short of the target.  If they make the Kapalua cut, they probably finish in the Top 80.  If they don't make the Kapalua cut, they are in serious trouble.

NERVOUS:

#80 Linda Wessberg is just over $5000 short of the projected target after finishing T67 at Longs.  Even if she makes the cut at Kapalua, Linda has to hope nobody behind passes her, or she earns at least enough to pass two or three ahead while no more than that jumps her.  A tenuous position, 80th place!

SWEATING BULLETS:

Jennifer Rosales (81 - T57) and Gloria Park (82 - T47) must make the cut, pass Wessberg, and stay ahead of anyone rushing from behind.  If they can earn about $12,000 (around 25th place), that might do it.

BACK AGAINST THE WALL:

Meredith Duncan (83 - T32) is $14,000 short of the target.  Mikaela Parmlid (84 - T9) is $17,000 short despite her Top 10 at Longs.  Dorothy Delasin (85) missed the cut and needs $19,000.  A Top 15 finish is necessary for any of these three to have a chance.  Danielle Downey (88 - DNS) and Reilley Rankin (89 - T29) need about $23,000, which equates to a Top 10 finish.

NEED A MIRACLE:

#91 Erica Blasberg on down.  By not getting into the Longs field, Blasberg needs more than $26,000 (probably seventh place or better) to crack the Top 80.

The Top 100 race looks like this:

LOCKS:

#96 Mollie Fankhauser and up.  Fankhauser locked up her spot by finishing 11th at Longs and now sits $3300 ahead of the projected target.  Parmlid also locked up a Top 100 spot this week and now has a slim chance of making Top 80.

RELAXED:

Charlotte Mayorkas (97 - T19) and Eva Dahllof (98 - DNS) are both over $1000 ahead of the target number.  Even if they miss the cut, three or four players would have to pass them and since all of those players are at least $8000 behind, the chance of that is pretty small.

APPREHENSIVE:

Nobody.

NERVOUS:

Karin Sjodin (101 - MC) fell out of the Top 100 and now needs about $6500 to pass Julieta Granada or Laura Davies (who both have 1a status locked up) and hold off any other challengers.  If Karin can finish in the Kapalua Top 40, that might do it.

SWEATING BULLETS:

Eunjung Yi (103 - DNS) is almost even with Sjodin, with one big exception - Yi is currently only the sixth alternate to make the Kapalua field.  UPDATE:  As of Tues am, Yi is down to second alternate.  Keep your fingers crossed for her.  Obviously, she comes up short if she doesn't get in.  Michelle Ellis (104 - DNS) and Dina Ammaccapane (105 - DNS) are both in the field and need about $8000 (top 30 finish).

BACK AGAINST THE WALL:

Carolina Llano (107 - T57), Taylor Leon (108 - DNS), Sherri Turner (109 - DNS), Becky Lucidi (110 - 18) and Brandie Burton (111 - MC).  Leon is the third alternate to get into the Kapalua field, the rest are in.  UPDATE:  Leon made the field after several players withdrew late Monday.  They need between $14,000-19,000 to reach the Top 100.

NEED A MIRACLE:

#112 Jimin Jeong on down.

Hey Ron Sirak how's your Karin Sjodin pick doing?

He had her as a top 30 player before the LPGA season began this year. Hee Won Han was no where to be found.

Lets not forget he also had only one Asian golfer among his top 10 players. Right now it is 4 out of the top 10, which has been the minimum every year for 3-4 years. It’s also 7 of the top 13, Sirak had 2 in the top 13.

For entertainment purposes only

I look at that top 30 prediction list by Sirak or any other paid golf writer as like the tip sheets that are sold outside the gates at racetracks. I doubt Sirak put more than five minutes of thought into it—after all, none of his own money is on the line. If he were entered in a contest for serious money he would have put more thought into it, and his improved list probably would have looked more like your own.
