Kapalua LPGA Classic - 1st Round
Suzann Pettersen posted 68 and leads the Kapalua LPGA Classic by one stroke over Brittany Lang and Tracy Hanson. Six players are tied for third after rounds of 70.
Pettersen birdied three of her last four holes to take the overnight lead. Hanson aced the par-3 12th, birdied the par-5 15th and bogeyed none. Lang overcame two first-nine bogeys and birdied her final hole (#9). The scores, including those of the Bubble Girls in bold:
70 Laura Diaz, Kristy McPherson, Ji Young Oh, Brandie Burton
71 Jee Young Lee, Hee-Won Han, Angela Stanford
71 Cristie Kerr, Karin Sjodin, Becky Lucidi
72 Na On Min, Sherri Turner, Juli Inkster, Candie Kung
72 Yani Tseng, Helen Alfredsson, Charlotte Mayorkas
73 Eva Dahllof, Dorothy Delasin, Mikaela Parmlid, Maria Hjorth
73 Christina Kim, Katherine Hull, Eun-Hee Ji, Seon Hwa Lee
74 Lorena Ochoa, Danielle Downey, Jane Park
74 Moira Dunn, Kris Tamulis, Taylor Leon
75 Michelle Ellis, Karrie Webb, Gloria Park, Jennifer Rosales
76 Meredith Duncan, Linda Wessberg, Carolina Llano, Erica Blasberg
77 Annika Sorenstam, Reilley Rankin, Eunjung Yi
78 Wendy Doolan, Dina Ammaccapane
82 Angela Park, Russy Gulyanamitta
As you might have expected, the scoring was affected by gusty winds - only 19 players were under par. Lorena Ochoa's four birdies were more than offset by her six bogeys, and Annika Sorenstam double-bogeyed twice en route to a front-nine 40.
I read this morning that ADT will not be renewing its contract after the end of this year. This isn't just another tournament sponsor to be replaced - it's the sponsor of the Tour's marquee end-of-the-season championship, the "LPGA Playoffs" as they like to call them. That sponsor won't be replaced as easily as a regular event, so I'm hoping that the negotiations on that were already well underway before this announcement. The Constructivist has some good observations and links on this subject over at Mostly Harmless.

Whew
I’m glad Annika made the cut. Don’t want to have missed cuts at the end of the final year. Was hoping Charlotta would make it, too, so they could play together tomorrow. I feel for all of the ladies — the conditions seem brutal.
