Samsung World Championship - Epilogue

Creamer08_medium

Paula Creamer's fourth victory of 2008 was an emotional one for her, playing in front of family and friends near where she grew up.  She could barely speak during her greenside interview.  Considering also her outburst on the course Friday, it's safe to say Paula really wanted this one.

Star-divide

Creamer did not play her usual pink golf ball yesterday and we never heard why.  I don't know which is more surprising - Paula not using the pink ball on Sunday or nobody in the broadcast crew saying anything about it.  If Judy Rankin had been there, I guarantee it would have been mentioned.

The scoring average for the four days was 71.69, not as low as some Samsung events but not as high as it could have been.  The players were lucky that Friday was the only day that wind was a factor (73.2 that day, 71.2 the other three) because the narrow fairways and rough at Half Moon Bay was plenty difficult.

Angela Stanford had a great week considering the shoulder "impingement", as Dan Hicks called it.  That sounds comparable to Jeong Jang's wrist tendonitis.  I hope both players can make it through the end of the schedule and rest those injuries enough to avoid surgery.

Song-Hee Kim led the field in driving accuracy this week and given the Ocean Course's rough, that explains a lot about her great performance.  In her rookie year, Kim was T18 in distance and 76th in accuracy.  This year she's sacrificed about 10 yards of distance to gain about 50 points on her accuracy and I don't think you can argue with her results.  Can somebody relay that point to Morgan Pressel, please?

What happened to Na Yeon Choi?  A two-shot lead entering the weekend wound up as a T17 after rounds of 75-79.  A great opportunity to make up ground on Yani Tseng in the ROY race slips away (Tseng was T13).

Great coverage by NBC, Saturday they might have remained on the air for three more holes to see Paula close the gap. It was also refreshing to see Dottie back in the booth. Speaking about injuries, have you heard any updates on Natalie Gulbis back injury, I noticed she pulled out of the Longs Drugs Challenge this week and might be away for 5/6 weeks.

no info on Gulbis

I haven’t heard a word about any injury problems although the back wouldn’t be a surprise.

FYI - Pink Ball

From the SF Cronicle

" … Creamer usually plays a pink ball in the final round, but she went with a conventional white one Sunday because she’s testing a new Bridgestone ball. If she likes it – and the early returns are encouraging – then the company will make a pink version"
