Hana Bank KOLON Championship – Epilogue

Candiekung01_medium

Candie Kung won three times during the 2003 season, her second on the LPGA Tour.  She finished sixth on the money list that year and ranked #11 on the HD system.  For about a three-year span, Candie was definitely one of the 15 best players on Tour.  In 2004, she fell to 17th on the money list (and HD #15) but collected ten Top 10 finishes.  Kung was 11th in money and 10th in my rankings in 2005.  2006 saw her drop out of my rankings (29th in money) and last year Candie made only 15 starts as she battled injury.  She's comeback nicely this year and just got back into my rankings three weeks ago at #28.  Look for this Taiwanese-born naturalized U.S. citizen to remain ranked among the Tour's best in the coming months.

Star-divide

While the cool and breezy weather kept the scoring up, the average of 73.26 was the lowest of any Korean LPGA event going back to 2005 and was over 2.5 strokes lower than last year's debacle.

After taking the lead in Round One, Katherine Hull stumbled badly to a 76 on Saturday but came back strong Sunday to finish second.  It was Hull's fourth Top 5 (and fifth Top 10) in her last eight starts.  Jee Young Lee's tie for third was her second straight Top 10 after going 13 straight starts without one.

Ji-Yai Shin and Hee Kyung Seo finished at even par T17 and were the top KLPGA finishers.  Ha-Neul Kim, Bo Kyung Kim and Ji-Na Lim finished +2 T22.

This week's Big Surprise Award will be shared by Jimin Kang and Amy Yang.  Kang collected her third Top 10 of the year (but her first since Sybase in May) by finishing tied for seventh.  Yang finished tied for ninth for her first LPGA career Top 10 but Amy has won twice this year on the LET.  The Big Disappointment goes to Seon Hwa Lee, who finished T46.

Annika Sorenstam did not play in Korea this week - she stayed in China and won the LET event in a playoff over Li Ying Ye.  You know that saying "if you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all"?

Why would you want to say anything bad? Annika is also a longtime LET member and it’s her business to choose which tour to play at any given week…

plus it sets up her design biz

Don’t see her in the Mizuno field, either. Looks like she has China on her mind.
