ADT Championship - 3rd Round

The final eight players at the ADT Championship are Paula Creamer, Jeong Jang, Eun-Hee Ji, Seon Hwa Lee, Suzann Pettersen, Ji-Yai Shin, Angela Stanford and Karrie Webb.

Pettersen dominated play for the most part, overcoming a triple-bogey at the par-4 4th with seven birdies in an 11-hole stretch (including four in a row from 13 to 16) to post the low-round of 68.  Creamer dominated the commentary - her recent physical problems were diagnosed this morning as possible appendicitis but she overcame the sharp stomach cramps to shoot 70.  Paula will be going back to see the doctor this evening to investigate her condition further and we'll see if she is able to go after the championship tomorrow.  Stanford posted 69 while Lee got in with 70 to advance with a couple of shots to spare.  Jang fought back from a watery double-bogey at 16 to birdie 18, finish -1 and secure her Sunday spot.  Shin rolled in an 8-footer for birdie at 18 to do the same.

Star-divide

Three players made the playoff for the final two spots.  Webb birdied 17 to reach -1 and had three feet left for par at 18 but missed it.  Ji was +1 until she canned an 8-footer to birdie 18.  Sun Young Yoo had 12 feet for birdie at 17 and seven feet for birdie at 18 but couldn't make either to avoid the playoff.  Only one hole was required to settle it, the 17th.  Ji teed off to 12 feet, Webb to 25 and both two-putted for par.  Yoo played to the left side of the green over 40 feet away and left her birdie try too low, stopped about six feet under the hole.  She missed her par putt left, and the final eight were set.

The only other players who came fairly close were Angela Park, who needed to hole out at 18 and missed by about six feet, and Helen Alfredsson.  Helen was today's designated Player-To-Be-Screwed-By-18.  In the tee box at -1, Alfredsson missed the fairway left.  Knowing she had little cushion to make it to Sunday, Helen played aggressively.  Do I really need to describe how her ball went into the water?  Her fourth was a huge mistake - a short chip which rolled back across the hazard line, where Alfredsson snagged it before it dropped into the water.  She got up and in from there for a triple-bogey to finish two shots out of the playoff.  For a few minutes, the officials were discussing possible penalties for Helen touching her moving ball but they did not assess any.  I'm no rules official but once the ball crossed the hazard line, it seemed like one of those "no harm, no foul" things.  A penalty wouldn't have changed anything - everyone who got cut today earns the same amount of money.

The big concern going into Sunday is Creamer's health.  GC confirmed for us that if she can't play, only the remaining seven will go after the $1 million - Yoo would not get subbed into the open spot.  The scores get reset again and we'll see who has the best Sunday.  As I mentioned above, Pettersen was definitely the Saturday star but I'm sticking with my pre-tourney choice Stanford.

It was a miscommunication between a rules official and both Alfredsson and her caddie—they both thought they got a “nod” to stop the ball, when no such thing was intended. They decided not to penalize her because it was easy to misinterpret the non-intended gesture (and b/c it would be like rubbing salt in a very very raw wound, although they don’t quite say that).
