Q-School Finals Preview

The LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament - the grueling five-day test of nerves to secure Tour status for 2009 - gets underway Wednesday.  143 players will duke it out for 20 available Category 11 positions.  All players will play the first four rounds on two courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida with the low 70 players plus ties moving on to Sunday's final round.

Star-divide

The field includes players looking to earn their initial Tour card and those who are attempting to improve their status (and thus be eligible for more events) for next season.  Any ties for the 20th position will be settled by playoff holes.  Players who finish in positions 21-30 will earn Category 16 status while those who finish 31-40 will be in Category 20.  You can read what I posted earlier about these categories here.

The Constructivist has already weighed in with his picks for the Top 20 and has thrown down the gauntlet for others to do the same.  Of course I accept his challenge and submit my own choices here:

1.  Michelle Wie

2.  Amy Yang

3.  Stacy Lewis

4.  Shiho Oyama

5.  Song Yi Choi

6.  Anna Nordqvist

7.  Sun-Ju Ahn

14. Sophia Sheridan

16. Anja Monke

Kim Welch

Kim’s status on the LPGA next year is fairly low because she finished in tenth place on the FUTURES Tour money list. Only those who finished in the top five have full status. Consequently, Song Yi Choi, Jessica Shepley, Leah Wigger, Sophia Sheridan as well as Kim are competing at Q-School to improve their status.
