Q-School Final - 3rd Round

Mollie Fankhauser posted a 66 to seize the lead (-12) at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.  Shiho Oyama is second at -11 while Michelle Wie and Stacy Lewis are tied for third at -10.

While Oyama, Wie and Lewis may have lost ground to Fankhauser, they maintained their cushion for securing Category 11 status.  Each still has at least eight shots to play with in an effort to make the Top 20.  Here are some of the current scores with the all-important border lines included:

Sun Ju Ahn, one of my choices to make the Top 20, withdrew before the round started while Vikki Laing was DQ'd for signing an incorrect scorecard following the round.

Aside from Fankhauser, today's big moves forward came from Mayorkas (66 T5, up from T19), Wigger (66 T10, up from T58), Kemp (65 T20, up from T88), Hanna-Williams (68 T26, up from T66), Leon (68 T31, up from T80), Walshe (low round of the day 64 T31, up from T115) and Reid (65 T67, up from T123).  Bader and Na Ri Kim both moved into the Top 20 with rounds of 69.  Players who shot themselves out of the Top 20 include Welch (74 T31), Richdale (74 T41) and Ferrero (77 T67).

While I'm thinking about it...the Q-School leaderboard shows us in what position each player started the day.  Why don't the LPGA regular tournament leaderboards show that information every week?  It would make one blogger's task a little easier and accentuate the volatile day-to-day nature of each event.  Just sayin'...

The players not currently within the Top 70 have one more day to correct that situation, although their chances of finding the Holy Grail of the Top 20 are rather slim.  Those contestants would first have to play well enough tomorrow to make the final round, then play well enough Sunday to make up more than six shots (eight would probably be the realistic number) to catch the Top 20.  Doing that plus passing 50+ other players in two days isn't impossible (Alison Walshe and Melissa Reid did the latter in one) but I wouldn't want to count on it.

If you would like to read the blow-by-blow account of today's final group (Wie-Lewis-Oyama), check out the details from the LPGA Insider at LPGA.com.

The template being used for the Q-School leaderboard is from the FUTURES Tour Web site. While it offers the position at the beginning of the day, it doesn’t allow one fan to select her ten most interesting golfers of the day on a personalized leaderboard.

Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
