Q = Questionable

Let me start this post by congratulating Leah Wigger and Chella Choi for earning one of the Category 11 spots yesterday in a playoff against Allison Hanna-Williams and Na Ri Kim.

Secondly, I would like to apologize for the inaccuracies in my Q-School Final Round post yesterday afternoon and those contained in previous posts and responses to questions in various comment sections.

Thirdly and most importantly, I would like to take the LPGA brass to task for not only providing incomplete information on the qualifying procedure to the general public but to the contestants themselves.  Nowhere in the advance releases for Q-School was any mention that players finishing in the Top 20 who don't improve their previous status would have their results tossed out and open up a spot for Player #21 to attain Category 11 status.  On the contrary - the released information specifically stated that any players tied for 20th place would play extra holes to break the ties, with no mention of any other possibilities.  Even now - 24 hours after the fact - LPGA.com has no explanation for why four players who finished tied for 21st place were playing off for two Cat-11 spots.  We still don't know who the two players were who had their Top 20 results tossed out.

Speaking as a fan of many sports, a large part of the allure that these events have for me is in the anticipation/lead-in time of the event, specifically the "What Does This Event Mean" portion.  If I don't have a full (or nearly complete) understanding of what is at stake for the contestants, my interest in the event suffers significantly.  For example - when I am deciding which college football game to watch on Saturday afternoon, the context of the game is often more likely to influence my decision than the game itself.  I'll bet a lot of you think that way too, whether you've realized it or not.  This isn't the first time that I've used the available information from LPGA.com to spell out "what does this mean" on my blog, only to find out after the fact that one or more of the pertinent rules was omitted from general release.  FYI - I quit watching NASCAR because I got tired of the governing body "making up the rules as they went".

Now I want to tell you a story.  Yesterday afternoon, a friend of one of the Q-School players e-mailed me to ask for a copy of the memo which the LPGA posted on their site spelling out the various categories.  The link to that memo which I posted at the end of August broke down a couple of weeks later and I unfortunately did not save the .PDF file for myself beforehand.  This friend was trying to help the player understand better the priority procedure and was writing me because the LPGA had not given the player any information whatsoever.  She also told me that no one at the media tent had any information for the player and that someone there said the LPGA officials were "trying to figure out what was what" during the final round.

Think about that for a minute.  Via one of her friends, a player at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament was trying to get qualifying information from some guy in Douglasville, Georgia because the LPGA wasn't making it available to her, even on the last day that the player had an opportunity to improve her status.

I can't overstate how ridiculous this is.  Granted, the priority status process is being used for the first time.  But the Tour has had over three months since it was announced to work out all of the specifics for how the process is supposed to work.  To get to the final round of the Q-School Finals and still not have all of the details in hand (or better, be well-known by all of the participants) is inexcusable on the part of the LPGA.  The officials in Commissioner Bivens' administration need to develop and deliver these procedures in a timely and serious manner if they expect the players to treat the administration or the procedures with any respect.

I expected this

Was told by my many diferent people in Daytona before Sunday and got a different answer everytime. BUT NEVER GOT THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!

Has to be Fankhauser and Mayorkis, though it makes no sence. They both improved their status within that proirity. Expect other scores to be dropped for 21-30 and 31-40 as a couple of players with 100-125 priority finished in the range.

Note no announcement was made about the playoff until prob close to 30 minutes after the final group was done and 80% of the spectators had left. In fact I was on my way out when I heard the annoucement.

Now onto what should be taked about:
The playoff was speachless. The quality of play from Allison Hanna Williams, Na Ri Kim, Chella Choi and Leah Wigger was beyond Clutch!!!
The combined scored for the 4 holes played was 6 under par with no boggys and all 4 players birdied the 2nd playoff hole which played into the wind. What a shame no one saw it!!!!!

Congrats to all 20 or 22 or who know but especially Leah Wigger!! With what she had on the line and the conditions ,that was the most clutch birdie I have ever seen.

I only found out why there was a playoff from Golf Channel...

…in the last 10 seconds of one of the highlight reels from Sunday that I linked to. I didn’t bother to save a copy of that priority status .pdf file, either. I still haven’t seen a clear explanation/justification from the LPGA.

What I liked about the system was how clear-cut it was. Just because a player shows up twice in 1 category or in 2 different categories, that doesn’t seem to be a reason to throw out Q-School results and “revise” your stated rules. Change the rules between seasons if you don’t like the results.

Oh, and...

…I think that since Mayorkas and Fankhauser improved on their position in Categry 11, it wasn’t their Q-School results that were thrown out but their finish on the 2008 money list. But until we see the actual priority list for 2009, we won’t know for sure.

Agree

if so, money list players should have been added!!! WOW This is an absolute mess.

keep in mind, too...

…that #100 on the money list Julieta Granada is in 2 other higher-priority status categories than 11, too, b/c of her 2006 ADT win and her top 40 on the 2007 money list—and so is #88 Meaghan Francella. If I recall correctly from an earlier HD post, Lincicome and Davies also get in under category 1a (the 1-time-only high status for top 40 finishers two years earlier that becomes Category 12 next year). If they’re going to be soft about Q-School top 20 when it comes to those already in Category 11 who improve their standing, what about those other 4 “open” slots from players who aren’t using their Category 11 status based on 2008 winnings b/c they already have higher status from other results? By the LPGA’s own logic, shouldn’t they have opened Category 11 to the top 26 from Q-School?

sounds like government work

can you really be surprised when an organization has such a complex outline for participation ? aside from one simple explanation – that there are no “and ties” in the LPGA q-school – trying to make heads or tails of the rules requires an advanced degree in…something.

I am a bit baffled that in a system that seems very rigid, they would have a “let’s be nice” clause that allows players to move up and fill spots that they didn’t earn if a player who played better didn’t improve her position during the tournament. “Fairness” doctrines just muck things up.’

Dog – about this friend who got in touch with you – I hope your first reaction was “why are you going to the media tent for a ruling ? – those bozos can’t help – it’s not their job to give rulings – go to the Tour office.”

not looking for a ruling

Just a clarification of the rules for membership—what happens after Q-School is complete.

Q school confusion

Sarah Kemp, Taylor Leon and Paige Mackenzie are not using their Q school results and they should be using their 200 Money List for their exemptions or priorities…so based on the past they should be letting in at least 3 more players. Last year there were 8 players who had non exempt status from the 2007 money list and they finished in the conditional category and their spot was taking up by player next on the list. That allowed players like Amy Yang to have conditional status last year.

may have happened already

You notice that they removed those yellow, green, and red lines from their livescoring link. And that they weren’t having anyone play off to make the 30 and 40 spots bright lines, either. So even if there were only 3 players in the 21st-40th spots who are in Category 15 already (and my memory is that there were more—no time to check, though), there may have been enough in Categories 16 and 20 from ties that they wouldn’t have to go down to 44th place or whatever to fill out Category 20.
