2009 Preseason Rankings

The Constructivist's look back at last year's batch of preseason picks (mine included) prompted me to start thinking about this year's possibilities.  The absence of one Mrs. McGee plus the incredible rookie class coming in makes this task all the more difficult.  If I can finish second in the Prognostication Derby this year, I'll be grateful.

1.  Lorena Ochoa

2.  Ji-Yai Shin

3.  Paula Creamer

4.  Yani Tseng

5.  Suzann Pettersen

6.  Seon Hwa Lee

7.  Cristie Kerr

8.  Eun-Hee Ji

9.  Song-Hee Kim

10. Katherine Hull

11. Jee Young Lee

12. Angela Stanford

13. Hee-Won Han

14. Michelle Wie

15. Na Yeon Choi

16. Karrie Webb

17. Mi Hyun Kim

18. Jeong Jang

19. Angela Park

20. In-Kyung Kim

21. Jane Park

22. Candie Kung

23. Morgan Pressel

24. Brittany Lang

25. Karen Stupples

26. Christina Kim

27. Stacy Lewis

28. Sun Young Yoo

29. Hee Young Park

30. Meena Lee

Honorable Mentions:  Kristy McPherson, Stacy Prammanasudh, Laura Diaz, Amy Yang, Sandra Gal, Ji Young Oh, Helen Alfredsson, Momoko Ueda, Shanshan Feng, Shiho Oyama

My 2009 "Up Elevator" includes Shin, Ji, SH Kim, Hull, JY Lee (of course!), Wie, MH Kim, J Park, Lang, HY Park and M Lee.  The big downers are Alfredsson, Diaz, Inbee Park, Oh, Jang, Stanford and Choi.  Some of those choices are self-explanatory, the rest are just hunches.  Let's hear your predictions.

I'm saving mine till the 28th....

Did you see Jay Coffin of Golf Channel’s piece where he wrote that Wie’s camp was indicating she’d only play 12-14 events in ’09?

didn't see that

If true, my prediction would seem to be too high. Or maybe not.

it struck me as weird

Not sure I believe it, but am staying tuned the next couple of weeks to see if anything else comes up.

Why Jang so low?

Love the SH Kim pick—her stats do indeed suggest she should have a breakout season in ’09.

I have to admit, despite my intricate ranking system for the competition, I’m thinking about my list a little more simply, in terms of where I think the million-dollar barrier will fall and who I think will break it, then the same for the $600K boundary for the next tier….

JJ so low?

Mainly her wrist. I dropped Stanford a couple of notches too, because of her shoulder. In both of her LPGA seasons, Song-Hee’s stats look better than her results. I’m expecting her luck to even out a bit this year.

I don’t think I’ll be modifying my list just because somebody wrote “Wie’s camp was indicating” something. That could be anybody from B.J. himself to some Nike bozo. Besides – if Michelle plays as well as I think she might, she could rank in the Top 20 even with an abbreviated schedule.
