Ginn Gone
Thanks to the The Constructivist for his FanShot and story link.
I suppose the biggest surprise about this announcement is that it didn't happen sooner. We've known since last summer that the Ginn Tribute wasn't returning and the 2009 schedule has listed a TBD for the Ginn Open's purse ever since it was released. The failure of this event leaves the state of Florida without any LPGA tournaments at all this season and creates a two-week gap in the schedule between the Kraft Nabisco and the (thankfully still alive) Corona Championship.
Despite the reality of the current economic situation, I am pissed off about this announcement. Thanks for waiting until only 11 weeks before your event to pull out, fellas. Thanks for giving the Tour absolutely no chance to replace your over-speculated asses. Thanks for shooting yet another hole in our schedule and removing one of its largest purses to boot. Thanks for giving our Commissioner a reason to alienate and then kick out one of the Tour's longest-running sponsorships three years ago - since most folks are still buying groceries these days, I imagine the ShopRite people would already be preparing to host their '09 tournament if you guys hadn't come barging in.
Thanks for letting me vent, everybody.

Bivens is a train wreck in progress
Don’t forget how Wendy’s pulled the plug over unhappiness about their dates on the schedule
or
The demise of the ADT Championship because of tournament pricing.
Connie Wilson said no LPGA official was available for comment because of travel and schedule commitments. You mean not one person could be found with a cell phone.
I picture the LPGA HQ staff in a bunker somewhere hoping for a miraculous rescue of the tour while the song ’Don’t worry be happy now’ is played in the background.
Great post Bruce. I linked and quoted you at the usual blogs I write at.

Ginn
Everyone is allowed one mistake. Heaven knows I’ve made a few but where do you begin with Commish Bivens. Talk about the domino effect. Obviously overwhelmed by Ginn’s initial proposal, dollar signs everywhere, she can’t undo this one.
And while we’re at it, what a low-rent, money-grubbing weasel Ginn is. People were lining up to partner with this slimeball, including the great (and usually untainted) Annika Sorenstam. This loser promises the world to everyone based on the future sales at his properties. How about a little backup Bob? How about having the money up front and then worry about sales in your overpriced neighborhoods. Robert Gidel, the president of Ginn Resorts blames it on the recession and the current real estate market. Newsflash for Mr. G……this house of cards could have been toppled by an infant sneezing.
Shame on Ginn Resorts, all their businesses should be frozen immediately if they can’t honor their contracts. Shame on Bivens for jumping in with this dog and pony show while losing decades long relationships with established sponsors. That 1.3 million dollar event in South Jersey doesn’t look so bad now does it sweet cheeks? And shame on the LPGA membership for running Ty Votaw out of town. Since leaving the LPGA he has only become one of the most powerful and influential people in all of golf. He may not have been flashy, but the tour always grew solidly under his reign. A steady hand like his will be needed to clean this mess up. If Bivens’ hands ever stop shaking she might just find the time to pack her office.
World tour here we come.

Interesting observations about has-been, scum-bag, so-called real estate moguls. I agree. May Ginn and his ilk be run out on rails.
Because Mrs. Votaw is a well-established LPGA Tour player, Ty probably needed to find another gig after the wedding to avoid potential conflict of interest. I really hoped Carolyn Bivens would be successful, but it looks like that train has left the station. Hopefully the LPGA board has a search committee looking for a replacement while there’s still a Tour left.
Truth has a well-known liberal bias.
