Corona Championship - 2nd Round

Lorena Ochoa made it two 65s in a row to take a three-shot lead at the Corona Championship.  Suzann Pettersen is in second place at -13, Yani Tseng and Na Yeon Choi are tied for third at -11 while Kristy McPherson is fourth at -10.

Another bogeyless day equaled another 65 for Ochoa.  An eagle at the par-5 8th plus six birdies drove her score to -16, a mark through two rounds which has only been bettered five times in LPGA history:

36 holes

In relation to par

-20, 124 (65-59) Annika Sorenstam, Moon Valley Country Club, Phoenix, Ariz., 2001 Standard Register PING, par 72

-18, 126 (63-63) Annika Sorenstam, Seta Golf Course, Otsu-shi, Shiga, Japan, 2003 Mizuno Classic, par 72

-17, 127 (66-61) Karrie Webb, Walnut Hills Country Club, East Lansing, Mich., 2000 Oldsmobile Classic, par 72

-17, 127 (65-62) Wendy Ward, New Albany Golf Club, New Albany, Ohio, 2001 Wendy's Championship for Children at New Albany, par 72

-17, 125 (60-65) Paula Creamer, Highland Meadows Golf Club, Sylvania, Ohio, 2008 Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Presented by Kroger, par 71

Star-divide

Pretty heady stuff, although none of those five performances were accomplished on a course with par set to 73.  Pettersen stayed in the neighborhood with a tournament record-tying 64.  She blistered the back nine (her first nine holes) in 30 strokes, collecting seven birdies and two pars.  Tseng put up 66 to climb into the tie for third - since starting out at +2 through five holes Thursday, Yani is -13 since.  Choi avoided bogey for the second straight day but her eagle and two birdies lost four shots to the Ochoa steamroller.

The cut was even par, the lowest of any event so far this season.  Prominent names who are going home are Stacy Prammanasudh, Brittany Lincicome, Louise Friberg and Laura Diaz. There were several players in Category 14 or lower who really needed to make some money this week to bolster their status.  These missed the cut:  Haeji Kang, Angela Oh, Sunny Oh, Song Yi Choi, Maggie Will, Young-A Yang, Carri Wood, Becky Lucidi, Brandie Burton, Michelle Ellis and Taylor Leon.  The players who made the cut and will improve their status beginning with the Sybase event include Eunjung Yi (-8 T11), Anna Nordqvist (-5 T24), Brandi Jackson, Allison Hanna-Williams, Na Ri Kim, Sarah Kemp, Paige Mackenzie, Jimin Jeong and Karin Sjodin.

Only nine players are closer than eight shots to Ochoa so the vast majority of the field is already out of contention.  Lorena will have to come back down to earth tomorrow for anybody outside the current top 20 to get back in it.

reshuffle

Dog, am I missing something? In most cases this priority reshuffle means very little. It’s not a big deal Hana Kim or Simi Mehra are DNS. Top of P-20 the rest of the year will still get you next to nothing if not nothing. Did someone from the LPGA tell you otherwise? or maybe i am misreading your blogs?

I believe it looks like this.

Player…… money so far….. status in Mexico…… player previous in that spot…..

P-14
Brandi Burton $3,516 missed cut replace Burton
easy to maintain your status if no one else is in your priority

P-15
T. Leon $20,948 MC replace Sjodin
K. Sjodin $16,353 T47 Yi
E. Yi $8,934 T11 Ellis
D Ammaccapanne $7,484 DNS Ammaccapanne
J. Jeong $7,370 T33 Turner
S. Kemp $3,541 T47 Leon
P. Mackenzie $2,157 T47 Lucidi
M Ellis $0 MC Jeong
Turner $0 DNS Mckay
B. Lucidi $0 MC Wood
M. McKay $0 DNS Mackenzie
C. Wood $0 MC Kemp
YA Yang $0 MC Yang

the bottom 6 are set, Mackenzie and Kemp have the most to gain . This by far is the most important race the difference from the top to bottom may be as much as 10 tournaments

P-15a
Maggie Will $5,597
Jackie Gallagher Smith $2,157
nobody here made the cut in mexico or made any money so this one is done. the measly 2 grand JSG made passes some 58 golfers, unfort most are retired.

p-16
H Kang $5,499 mc Nari Kim
A Nordqvist $ 2,847 T-24 Hanna Williams
NR Kim $0 T-65 Nordqvist
A Hanna Williams $0 T56 Buzminski
Buzminski $0 DNS Richdale
Richdale $0 DNS Srisawang
Srisawang $0 DNS Jackson
B Jackson $0 T-65 Kang
Elosegui $0 DNS Elosegui

Just by making the cut Jackson jumps up 3 spots. Don’t think it matters, seems Buzminski, Richdale and Srisawang will focus on the FT and even top of this list won’t get you in many tournaments. prob more important Jackson cashes a big check to help pay for the Futures Tour.

P-17 Unchanged seems Choi is the only one interested in playing LPGA events this year unfort it will be through Monday Q day.

P-18 no one there

P-19 no one has played stays the same

p-20 stays the same, no one has made any money
this is the Priority that has convinced me a player can not jump priority.
Only Sunny and Angela Oh played in Mexico. Sunny also is the only one focusing on LPGA events.

Why wouldn’t have more entered the tourney in mexico? also 75% of P-17 did not play and close to 50% of P-16. Tweeter Nicole Hage played Mexico last year and still played at a course in TX she had never seen until this week.
Note: of all the players in P14-20 Eunjung Yi is 3rd on the P14-20 money list with just $8,934 30th place this week will get you around $10,000.

It HAS to be set up this way. If not, let the ??? begin.

The part you’re missing is – all of the players from Category 14 down will be reordered together, not within their current categories. They will then line up by their current money list order following behind Category 12. This is specifically stated on page 11 of the Priority List document.
