Kraft Nabisco Championship - Final Round

Brittany Lincicome made the shot of her life, a hybrid from 210 yards to within four feet which set up an eagle to win the Kraft Nabisco Championhip.  It is the third victory of her five-year LPGA career, her first since 2007 and her first major championship.  Cristie Kerr and Kristy McPherson finished tied for second at -8, one shot behind.  Lindsey Wright was fourth at -6 while Suzann Pettersen and Meaghan Francella tied for sixth at -5.

I'll let Part Two of my Live Blog tell the story of how they finished (if you want the set up for that great finish, check out Part One first).  It couldn't have been any more exciting during that last 90 minutes.  Even the supporting cast added to the excitement - Michele Redman with an ace at 17 and Lorena Ochoa with a slow-motion chip-in for eagle at 18.  I hate it for Kerr, who cost herself dearly with poor tee shots at 13 and 15 (double-bogey at the latter) and for McPherson, who let several good birdie chances pass by on the back nine.  But I am so thrilled for Lincicome, whose game had slid so far over the last two years that I wasn't sure she could rebound.  But rebound she did and this week we all got to see the talent that she regularly displayed in 2006 and 2007.  About a month ago we saw that she was working on her game playing in SunCoast Series events in Florida.  Perhaps she discovered a new route to success on that minor tour that other LPGA members might attempt.

For the record, Brittany's caddy and father joined her on the pond jump.  Congratulations Brittany!

Comeback player of the year

That was my prediction for Brittany at the beginning of the year. I will get at least one LPGA prediction right this year(But not too many others).

I linked to this post from OTB Sports. Will do the same for TC after he chimes in.

Kraft Nabisco - "Lexi"

Contratulations to 14 year old Lexi Thompson and 21 year old Tiffany Joh – they finished T21 overall & tied for low amateur in the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Congrats to Brittany !!

Really happy to see Brittany Lincicome win this one, I just get the feeling that she is a pretty honest and straight-forward lady. For some reason Kerr’s birdie celebration on the 18th hole rubbed me the wrong way.. didn’t she see how close Lincicome was to making the eagle?? Again, great win for Brittanny and very exciting finish.

SunCoast Series

What a difference a month makes! A final-round 79 on a SunCoast Series Sunday dropped her out of the money in that event.

McPherson will slowly realize how devastating that was

She was favored for a major until Brittany’s second shot. But now McPherson is shuffled back into the pack like the Arizona Cardinals, 40/1 or higher in every subsequent major. I doubt she’ll ever win one. There’s a media tendency to be nice and praise the upstart runnerup, estimating plenty of game and subsequent chances. It’s not reality.

Tough break to hit the pin on 17 without going in or snuggling to tap in range. But McPherson let several golden chances slide. She made a huge mistake by putting her approach putt from the fringe so far past the hole when Kerr was in trouble on 13. That followed a birdie miss on 12.

After Lincicome’s drive on 18, I told my dad she had a chance for a hero shot. Frankly, if that had been 6+ feet I doubt she would have holed it. Some media reports listed it as 6 feet. I want them to time the rest of my life. I’ll get a few bonus decades.

Lincicome has difference making length but her transition is too quick from the top, causing erratic results, and her putting is mediocre, generally in the 1.83 to 1.85 range in putts per GIR. You can’t expect a flurry of top finishes with numbers like that. This year she is much better than typical at 1.80 but I don’t expect it to stay there, based on her stroke. Last year Brittany’s greens in regulation fell way off, causing the horrible season. But so far this year she’s restored it to previous level.

don't dismiss her too fast

I only doubt that McPherson will ever win a major in that her window of opportunity (she’ll be 28 next month) is only going to allow her 20-30 more chances. That statement may sound foolish but think about it realistically. Four majors per year over the next six years is 24 – she’ll be 34 then and aside from Sorenstam and Inkster we haven’t seen too many majors won by players at least that age. And even though 30 chances sounds like a lot, a lot of players play in 30 majors without ever winning.

Having said that, I can’t sit here and tell you that a player who is knocking on the door of my Top 30 is never going to win a major. Hell, a player who was ranked outside my Top 100 just won one. I agree that sometimes when we see a player just miss winning a major, our natural reaction is “boy that was close, she’s going to win one of these soon” instead of “she just missed out and that might have been the only chance she was ever going to get”. This is one of the few examples I can think of where we automatically put an optimistic spin on a result.

When I was live-blogging Brittany’s shot to 18, I posted immediately that it was about four feet away. Verne Lundquist said it was six feet so I almost changed it. In retrospect it was closer to three than six.
