Michelob Ultra Open - Final Round
Cristie Kerr took the lead with a birdie at 15 and went on to win the Michelob Ultra Open by two strokes. It was her 12th career victory and her second at Kingsmill in four years. In-Kyung Kim finished in second place at -14 while Song-Hee Kim and Lindsey Wright tied for third at -13.
The back nine was a multi-player battle which would have been perfect for live-blogging, had I been able on Sunday afternoon. The top four jostled for position throughout, with Wright and Kerr leading the way through 12 at -16. Both bogeyed 13 to allow Inky to join them at the top until she bogeyed 14. Song-Hee birdied 14 and 15 to jump over all of them but an awful approach at 16 wound up some 30 yards left of the hole and cost her a double-bogey. Inky missed a short par putt at 16 to fall back to -14 with Song-Hee. Back at the par-5 15th, Kerr managed to reach the green in two (a rare feat this week) and two-putted for birdie to take the solo lead at -16. At 16, Wright landed her approach next to the greenside bunker and couldn't get up-and-down from the awkward lie. Suddenly the near free-for-all had turned into a two-shot lead for Kerr with only two to play. Cristie almost canned a lengthy birdie putt at 17 (it stopped one turn short) which would have really salted it away. But when none of the other contenders could birdie 18 (Lindsey and Song-Hee bogeyed it, ceding second place to Inky), Kerr's final hole was anti-climactic.
As TC notes at Mostly Harmless, the low scoring of the first three days disappeared Sunday - at least for the players in the Top 10. None of the first five broke 70 (third-round co-leader Wright shot 73) and Ai Miyazato's 68 was the best of those who finished better than T20. Lift-clean-place was in effect yesterday as it had been all week but it seemed to me that a combination of drier greens and jitters jumped up to bite the leaders. In hindsight it seems natural that Kerr (the only player of the four with multiple victories and the only one with any victories besides Inky) would keep it under control and win.
If time permits, I'll put together an Epilogue later today. My dad has been in the hospital over the weekend and while he's doing much better, we're not sure he'll get to come home today. Thank goodness they had ESPN2 in his room!
