Sybase Classic - Epilogue
Of the players who have won LPGA tournaments over the last couple of years, Ji Young Oh didn't impress me as one likely to win another anytime soon. Since her victory at State Farm last July, Oh had only collected two Top 10s (T9 in China and T6 at MasterCard). In those 17 starts however, she had missed only two cuts and finished in the teens five times so her HD rating had only dropped to #26. I'm sure a lot of people watching yesterday had no idea this Korean girl had already won an LPGA event on American soil since Ji Young hasn't gotten much attention since that victory. Maybe that will change this time around.
I guess Oh's specs have been replaced by contacts or Lasik surgery. Too bad, I kinda liked her with glasses.
DougieFresh and I must be on the same wavelength. I had already researched his question about players having scored an ace the week they won an event and yes, Jimin Kang at the 2005 Corning was the last time that had happened before Oh did it this week. I'll have to dig a bit more to find out whether that's happened any other times.
The scoring at Upper Montclair (73.17) was very close to the overall 2009 seasonal average. Sunday was the toughest scoring day by far, with only one round in the 60s (M.J. Hur's 68) and 13 rounds under par as the field averaged more than 74 strokes apiece. In that context, Oh's final round 70 was excellent.
Becky Lucidi collapsed in the fairway during Saturday's round. I know she has a pacemaker but unfortunately didn't catch much else of the information that Judy Rankin passed along during yesterday's coverage and can't find anything through Google this morning. If any of you have the details, please let me know in the comments. Becky went on to complete the event and finish T23, her best by far in 2009.
It's pretty obvious to me that Michelle Wie's game fits the "bomb and gouge" description. Long hitter, uses shorter irons from the rough to recover. She might need to hit fairways a little more than 52% of the time to contend every week but, like her counterpart in overexposure on the men's side, Michelle isn't ever going to rate well in Driving Accuracy and doesn't need to. Just sayin', since the ESPN folks seem to worry about that a lot.
On the subject of the World Wide Leader, where were the HD cameras this weekend (high-definition, not Hound Dog)? The production crew didn't have far to haul them, only being an hour or so from Bristol. Probably needed them for the lacrosse quarterfinals...
Louise Stahle is this week's Big Surprise. Louise finished T8 for her second career Top 10 and her first since the 2005 British Open. The Big Disappointment was Lindsey Wright, who missed the cut by two shots after I pegged her for a Top 5 finish.

first Tseng, now Pettersen...
…have fallen victim to Oh. And yet I remain surprised at her ability to close the deal. She now trails only Seon Hwa Lee for most wins in her generation (classes of ‘06-’08) and is tied with Morgan Pressel. That’s pretty good company!
I’m focusing on the positives, given how bad Ai-chan and Moira played yesterday….
