Player Meeting in Williamsburg
Over the weekend, the LPGA held a mandatory player meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia, the site of this week's Michelob Ultra Open. From the AP article on the so-called "Summit", the gathering was a combination pep rally/business overview.
Given all of the negative news in recent months, this gathering was a good idea. I'm sure many of the players have been worried about the Tour's stability. While the meetings won't solve any of the financial problems, the LPGA is correct to reinforce the importance of connecting with the fans through community involvement and new media outlets like Twitter and Facebook. Even more important was the message that the strength of the organization outweighs the total of the individual parts. I'm sure most of the players knew that already but in the light of a dwindling schedule and apathetic media coverage, that point needed to be hammered on.
