Wegmans - 2nd Round

Jiyai Shin leads by three as the second round of the Wegmans LPGA continues.  Morgan Pressel is in second place at -8 (through 14 holes) while four players are tied for third at -7 - Sandra Gal, Stacy Lewis, Kristy McPherson and Michelle Wie.

Two more weather delays (the second lasting over four hours) on Friday prevented the scheduled afternoon groups from finishing their rounds.  Several will have to play as many as 11 holes starting at 7 this morning before Round Three can commence.  This time however, officials will have to cut the field to low 70 plus ties so they won't be able to start those groups while others finish their previous round as they did Friday morning.  Maybe around 9:30 the remaining players will be able to go off 1 and 10 to begin the third round.

Star-divide

Shin posted 68 and stood four shots clear by the time the coverage ended at 7pm EDT.  Pressel birdied twice in her final four holes (11 and 13) to draw within three.  First-round leader Gal was still leading at -11 after birdies at 10 and 11 but she started having tree troubles, resulting in bogeys at 12 and 14 and a double at 16.  The rest of the quartet at -7 were all midway through their final nine and playing well especially Wie, who went out in 31 and had not bogeyed through 12.  Jennifer Rosales posted her second straight 69 and currently stands in seventh place at -6.

The cut is currently +1.  18 players straddling the cut line still have holes to play this morning so that number could change either way.  Certain to be out the door are Eun-Hee Ji and Katherine Hull while on the threshold are Song-Hee Kim (despite a Friday 69) and Anna Nordqvist.  Charlotte Mayorkas withdrew before the round started and Paula Creamer, suffering from an injured thumb, withdrew sometime after the TV coverage ended.

UPDATE:  They finished up Round Two about 9:45.  Pressel climbed to -10 (one shot back) with birdies at 16 and 18.  Lewis is now -9 alone in third as she birdied 7 and 8.  McPherson birdied 17 to end up -8 while Wie bogeyed 13 and birdied 17 to remain -7.  Mindy Kim made a run to join the group at -7, posting a round of 68.  The cut stayed at +1 - Seon Hwa Lee, Vicky Hurst, Jane Park and Anna Nordqvist escaped the chopping block to make a total of 75 players who will play some more today.

On Thursday, I listed 17 players who really needed to make the cut this week or their chances of playing later this year would diminish greatly.  Dina Ammaccapane did not start - she's been battling injury so a medical extension is probably in her cards for 2010.  As for the other 16, five of them made the cut with flying colors and five came up just short:

-5  Sarah Kemp

-3  Carri Wood

-2  Haeji Kang, Becky Lucidi

-1  Brandi Jackson

+2  Brandie Burton, Allison Hanna-Williams, Paige Mackenzie

+3  Michelle Ellis, Young-A Yang

Kemp and Wood are currently in the Top 20 so if either can maintain that position through Sunday, their money list standing will get a fine boost indeed.  Especially Wood, who hadn't made a single cut in eight previous starts this season.  Hanna-Williams was even par when she resumed her round this morning but she had her entire second nine left to play, and she dropped two shots along the way to miss the cut.  Fortunately Allison's recent good showings had moved her into the money list Top 80 so her stock should be rising despite the MC.
