State Farm Classic - Final Round
In-Kyung Kim birdied 16 to tie for the lead and again at 17 to take the lead as she won the State Farm Classic. It is the second victory of Kim's career, both of which have come in the last eight months. Se Ri Pak finished in second place at -16 one shot behind while Hee-Won Han, Jee Young Lee and Angela Stanford wound up tied for third at -15.
Regretfully, I wasn't able to watch much of the TV coverage yesterday or today (we had company in town for the weekend) and I hope you'll forgive the lack of my usual blow-by-blow account. It looks like there was a free-for-all today at Panther Creek and I missed all but about 30 minutes of it. I do know that Stanford held a two-shot lead after a birdie at 6 but fell back into a tie at -14 when Pak birdied 8 and she bogeyed 9. Kim birdied 11 to join the two at -14. Pak birdied 13 to take the lead at -15. Inky answered at 13 with a birdie of her own to get back into the tie. Stanford exchanged a birdie at 10 with bogey at 11 but then birdied both 12 and 13 to seize the lead at -16. Just as quickly, Angela gave it right back - bogeys at 14 and 15 dropped her back to -14 just as Pak birdied 16 to take back the solo lead. Inky tied Pak for the lead for the third time when she also birdied 16 and her long birdie putt at 17 gave her the solo lead for the first time all week. Stanford rebounded with a birdie at 16 to draw within two and went to 18 (after a 20-minute lightening delay) needing an eagle 2 to force a playoff, which didn't happen.
Several others had the title in sight - Han got to -15 after a birdie at 13 but a bogey at 15 was ill-timed. Her birdie at 16 (lots of those today) salvaged a share of third place. Jelly came on strong with three straight birdies at 12, 13 and 14 to reach -14 but only found one more, at 18 to finish two shots back. Kristy McPherson faded early and wound up T18 while Cristie Kerr faded late (bogeys at 15 and 17) to finish T6. Conditions returned to the less blustery ones of the first two rounds, allowing Eun-Hee Ji to fire a 63 and climb into a tie for sixth and Paula Creamer to shoot 65 and do the same. Inky, Han, Anna Rawson (-12 T13) and Anna Grzebien (-11 T15) matched Paula's 65 while five others (including Pak) got home in 66.
So after picking Inky to win Corning and she finished T22, I left her completely out of my picks this week and got burned big time. It's a good thing I don't ever put any money on these predictions or I'd have to work two real jobs.
