U.S. Open - Saturday Live-Blogging

I realize that by live-blogging Saturday, I am by extension also committing myself to do Sunday.  Consider this payback for short-changing you guys the last two years running - vacations during the Open weekend seriously curtailed my blogging each year, especially in '07.  This is my first chance to actually watch most of the coverage since Annika beat Pat Hurst in the 18-hole Monday playoff in 2006.  On to the leaderboard watch (since NBC doesn't start until 3pm):

1:00pm - 30 minutes until Kerr and Creamer tee off.  Hee Young Park and Lindsey Wright have early birdies (at 2 and 1 respectively) and are +1.  Off to good starts and currently at +3 are Candie Kung (-3 on the day), Ji Young Oh and Laura Davies (time to start talking about those Hall Of Fame points again!).  Morgan Pressel was -4 on the day and +3 overall until she bogeyed 14.  If she can pick up another shot or two in the last three holes, Morgan might have a chance tomorrow.  Early returns lead me to believe that the conditions are still good and maybe the pins aren't quite as tough, as scoring seems a little better (of course after the cut that is usually the case too).  Only one round in the 80s so far and Maria Jose Uribe finished in 69.

Star-divide

1:20pm - Kung birdied 14 (third in five holes) and is now +2.  Good comeback from yesterday's 77.  Nicole Castrale birdied 5 to also go +2.  Davies bogeyed 9 but birdied 10 and is still +3.

1:35pm - Park birdied 4 and is back to even par, down by three shots.  Song-Hee Kim bogeyed 2 and Eun-Hee Ji bogeyed 1 - both are +2 tied with five other players including Wright, who bogeyed 3.  Na Yeon Choi, Giulia Sergas and Jean Reynolds all parred #1.  The final group is on the course.

1:45pm - Davies doubled 11 and is now +5.  Stop talking about Hall Of Fame points for awhile.  Alexis Thompson bogeyed 3 and falls to +3.  Kerr and Creamer each par #1.  Now that everyone's underway, let's snapshot the board for future reference:

-3  Cristie Kerr

-2  Paula Creamer

-1  Jean Reynolds

E   Hee Young Park, Giulia Sergas, Na Yeon Choi

+2 Candie Kung, Nicole Castrale, In-Kyung Kim

+2 Lindsey Wright, Song-Hee Kim, Eun-Hee Ji

+3 Bae, J Song, Lu, Lincicome, Fudoh, Thompson

2:00pm - Sergas birdied 3 to go -1.  Choi bogeyed 2, falls to +1.  Castrale, Wright and Ji all drop shots (at 7, 5 and 3) and fall to +3.  Thompson bogeyed 4 and is now +4.  Pressel finished with 69 +5 overall after bogeying 18.  Ouch.  Park bogeyed 6, now +1.  Kung bogeyed 17, now +3.  Kerr and Creamer both bogey 2.  Double Ouch.

2:10pm - Sergas bogeyed 4 and Reynolds bogeyed 3, now even par.  Castrale bogeyed 8 and goes +4.  Thompson bogeyed 5 (third straight) and is now +5.  Did somebody say scoring was better today?!?  Let's try that board thing again, I'm gettin' dizzy:

-2  Kerr

-1  Creamer

E   Sergas, Reynolds

+1  HY Park, NY Choi

+2  IK Kim, SH Kim

+3  Kung, Lu, Lincicome, Fudoh, Wright, Ji

+4  Bae, Oh, SJ Ahn, J Song, Castrale

+5 seven players, including Pressel (F)

2:15pm - Just like yesterday - Reynolds bounces back with a birdie at 4.  Tied for second at -1.  Jennifer Song birdied 11 to reach +3 - suddenly she's low amateur.  Fudoh bogeyed 6, now +4.  Kung reaches the clubhouse at +3, 68 is her score (best of the day so far).

2:25pm - After starting with six pars, In-Kyung Kim bogeys 7 and drops to +3.  Lincicome bogeys 7 and Fudoh bogeys 6 - both now +4.  Thompson stop the bleeding in a big way with birdie at 6, back to +4.  Kerr birdies 4 to take a two-shot lead.

2:30pm - For grins - Kyeong Bae just finished with a 69 and is +4 T14.  I'll bet she's in the Top 10 before the day is through.  Looka here, already T13 as Song dropped a shot at 12.  Wright bogeyed 7 and falls to +4 (T12!).

2:40pm - In that last leaderboard, Ji Young Oh was at +4.  But then she played 14 and took a triple-bogey 7.  Haven't mentioned Lorena Ochoa yet today, here's why - she shot 73 and is now +8.  Suzann Pettersen and Kristy McPherson aren't moving in the right direction either - both are +2 on the day and +5 overall after 9 holes.  BREAKING NEWS:  Eagle by Sun Young Yoo at the par-4 13th!  She's +3 for the championship.  Teresa Lu birdied 10 and is now +2 and alone in seventh place.

2:50pm - Song-Hee Kim bogeyed 7 and falls to +3.  Lincicome bogeyed 9 and goes to +5.  Wright bogeyed 8 (fourth in six holes) and also goes +5.  Ji birdied 7 and moves to +2 tied for 7th.  Sergas bogeyed 7, now +1.

2:55pm - Creamer bogeyed 6 and falls to even par.  SH Kim bogeyed 8 to go +4.  With NBC about to go on-air, here is how they stand:

-3  Kerr

-1  Reynolds

E   Creamer

+1  HY Park, Sergas, NY Choi

+2  Lu, Ji

+3  Kung (F), Yoo, IK Kim

+4  Bae (F), J Song, Castrale, Pettersen, Thompson, SH Kim

3:10pm - Dottie says conditions are tougher today because the wind is up.  I say conditions for viewers are tougher because Johnny Miller is in the booth with her.  I'll try not to mention him any more this weekend.  Castrale and Thompson bogeyed to fall to +5, Pettersen doubled 11 and goes +6.  Ji bogeyed 8 to go +3.

3:15pm - Reynolds had 15 feet to save par at 8 and just missed it right.  Kerr is now the only player under par and leads by three.  That didn't last long - sorry - Miller is already predicting that Kerr is going to run away with it!  Just for spite, Cristie hit her approach at 8 into a bunker.

3:25pm - Sergas took bogey at 9 when she missed from four feet.  Falls to +2.  Choi bogeyed 8 and also drops to +2.  Creamer had 10 feet for par at 9 (after a mis-hit tee shot) but missed right, +1.  Kerr had seven feet and saved her par.  Thompson had bogeyed 9 but birdied 10 and is still +4.  Park bogeyed 12 and drops to +2.

3:35pm - Forgot to pass along that the course is set up about 300 yards shorter today.  Might help scoring a bit, yes?  Ji made a five-footer for birdie at 10 to go +2.  Kerr came up way short at the par-3 9th and left her chip short in the fringe.  Just short on her 16-footer.  The bogey drops her to -2.  Creamer made a 12-footer to save par - huge save the way her day was going.

3:40pm - I'm going to split the live-blog into two parts since this is getting a little long.  The leaderboard looks like this:

-2  Kerr

E   Reynolds

+1  Creamer

+2  Lu, HY Park, Ji, NY Choi

+3  Kung (F), IK Kim, Sergas

+4  Bae (F), SH Kim

+5  six players including Pressel (F) and SJ Ahn (F)
