Update on Angela Park rumor

From Connie Wilson at  LPGA HQ-

There is no truth to this.

Connie was once again very kind to reply to an inquiry of mine. So why the heck did Caddy Larry make this up? His antipathy for the Korean players is well known and I think its roots trace back to him getting fired by Mi Hyun Kim back in 1999.

Anyone want to speculate what goes through Larry's head? Just be nice.

I don't think he made it up

I’ve read Larry’s blog for a long time and while he occasionally says things that piss a lot of people off, I don’t recall a single time where I thought “there is no way that’s true, he has to be lying”. But that’s the nature of rumors – one person’s source often gets contradicted by another’s and if you’re going to report one you should also report the other. We won’t truly know the answer to this until we either see Angela playing again or she confirms the rumor. It’s very possible she herself might not know the answer just yet.

I was wondering if his bad writing was to blame

If I recall the sentences right, he announced he was wrong on one player retiring and then mentioned Park’s DNS. I got the implication she was retiring from that, but I don’t think he stated it directly (or at least clearly).

Larry

Larry tends to fall for stories and rumors without checking them out or running them through the sniff test. He also posts things just to get a reaction and to get attention. He’s not caddying much anymore so his blog is all he has. I don’t know if he is working on content for a book based on all his caddie posts, but he needs continual stuff to keep his blog going.

While he is blatantly hostile against Koreans, his racism probably didn’t play a part in the Park incident. He did it to get attention and attention he got. It’s easy enough for him to post something outrageou only to retract it a few days later like he did.

interesting, except...

Larry has been posting “rumors” for quite some time. I don’t remember one that didn’t happen. He’s let us know about tournaments going away and commissioners being asked to find other employment opportunities. We, the consumers of the information, have reveled in our foreknowledge of events to come. Now he’s posted something that turned out to be untrue. Rather than saying: well, you can’t win them all, many in the blogging community have called him a liar and questioned his motives. Chill out people! To those throwing the darts, I guess God broke the perfection mold immediately after creating you, huh?

I don’t much care for Larry’s politics or his views on certain ethnic groups, but he’s been providing interesting insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of the LPGA for a few years. I’ve found his posts generally entertaining and occasionally very informative.

So go ahead, make him regret he ever embarked on the Web site venture. He’ll pull it down, we’ll have lost a source and you can all be ever so proud of yourselves.

Truth has a well-known liberal bias.

"She’s toast! The player I heard that was quitting golf didn’t but another did, I was told. Angela Park has packed it in. Jimin Kang was included in the field as her replacement."

Well, with that wording it is directly implied that Angela was quitting golf.

Not to mention his original statement about another player was, "Adios, ta-ta, auf wiedersehen: No matter how you say it, it’s still goodbye. One looper received a surprising text from his player indicating it was not just for the week, but for good! This youngster has decided to pack it in altogether and quit playing the Tour I was told."

Regardless, in the comments section of his original retirement statement, he stated that he wasn’t going to name names, because, "Sorry Johnny B, she may change her mind and I’d be up a creek."

Well, in this case he decided to blurt out Angela’s name. If it is in fact not true, why? Why this player, why name this name?

With everything you said Diane, I do think it is a benefit for all of us fans of the LPGA to have someone so close to the players posting regular updates. Just having more people in the LPGA Blogosphere is a good thing!

I think there’s a liability and a responsibility Larry has earned from his posts, and something like this is something to be made of. If it was simply a mistake on its own, that would be one thing, but the fact that he chose to name a proper name, after doing the opposite the week before, is interesting. I give a lot of credence to what Larry posts, and since he did name Angela specifically it added fuel to the fire.

Now if it were to turn out the original player in question wasn’t of Korean descent, I think it would’ve opened a whole other can of worms. I appreciate his posts, regardless, I just think there’s a good reason we’ve scrutinized this.
