Jamie Farr Classic - 2nd Round

Sarah Kemp and Laura Diaz are tied for the lead at -11 after two rounds at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.  Morgan Pressel is alone in third place one shot back while Jiyai Shin, Seon Hwa Lee and Natalie Gulbis are tied for fourth at -9.

Kemp shot 28 on the front nine (her back nine) en route to a career-best 63.  That nine-hole total was one off the LPGA record - only three players have ever played nine in 27 strokes, among them Paula Creamer during last year's Round One 60.  Diaz was even par on the day until she birdied four of her last six holes (including a Surprise! putt at the last which fell in from the right edge as Laura was walking after it) to reach -11.  Pressel just missed chipping in for birdie at 18 or else she would be tied with Kemp and Diaz.  Lee equaled her career-low with a 63 - four birdies on each nine and no bogeys for Seon Hwa through the first 36 holes.  Gulbis posted 65 to join Lee and Shin at -9, as Jiyai carded a 67.  Michelle Wie was only one shot behind going to the par-5 18th but she flew her third over the green and three-putted for a double-bogey.  Kyeong Bae fired a 64 (29 on the front nine) to move into a tie for seventh at -8.

Star-divide

Not quite as many players broke 70 today as did on Thursday but conditions were still favorable and 60 rounds in the 60s were recorded.  We may not see Pak's -23 record broken after all but we're going to see a lot of players in double digits.  The cut was -2 all day and it finished there.  Shi Hyun Ahn sank a long birdie putt at 18 to make it on the number, along with Angela Stanford, Na Yeon Choi, Brittany Lang, Sun Young Yoo and 13 others.  Not so fortunate were In-Kyung Kim, Ji Young Oh, Kristy McPherson, Hee Young Park and Angela Park.  A total of 83 players will tee it up on Saturday.

Good to see Diaz playing well like she often did last year, and good to see Pressel staying in contention after last Sunday's collapse.  Kemp earned a spot in the British Open with this two-day performance (the Farr is being used as a final qualifying event for the British again this year).  Lots of good players are playing well and hanging around four-to-six shots back (namely Pettersen, Ochoa and Tseng in addition to those mentioned above) so expect the low numbers and leaderboard fluctuations to continue.

Exciting stuff for #151- #156

also NR Kim moved up a spot just by making the cut and Brandi Jackson should move up at least 2. Brandi needs a top 25 to pass Lucidi and Kim a Top 20 to move pass Leon.

Kemp, Yi and Hanna-Wills though not in the US Open have earned a trip across the pond to play in the British Open. Burton and Kang are the only 2 in the US Open. For all other players unless they qualify for the British Open, this week will be their last tourny until the last week in August. !!!! I expect a handfull of these players to play on the futures tour in the meantime.

thanks for the money updates Phil

That means I don’t have to! Besides Kemp, Yi and Hanna-Williams, Kris Tschetter and Jin Joo Hong made the British Open field yesterday. Congrats to all!

Was glad to see Na Yeon Choi get made cut #41 (with no misses in her LPGA career). 9 past Seon Hwa Lee’s streak—don’t know of any other rookies who started out as consistent as those 2—do you?

Plus, a question: do you think it’s fair the media is making such a big deal of Michelle Wie’s walkoff double, when (for example) Stacy Lewis also doubled the 18th as she was making the turn—and ended up missing the cut? Or when Vicky Hurst made 2 doubles in her 1st 4 holes and couldn’t climb out of that hole, despite going -4 over her last 14.

not fair

But perfectly consistent. They have also been consistent in showing Wie practicing after her round is over while players are still on the course! Whether we want it or not, the media is still trying to mold Michelle into the female Tiger Woods – that is, make her the ONE player that everything else hinges on.

Agree about Wie

Lpga understands she is the Ticket. Though I give them some credit we saw some ,trying to make the cut, with Shi Hyun Ahn and Jenifer Rosalas. Even Allison Hanna Williams making a putt that got her in to the British. Funny they didn’t mention any reshuffle? Especially with Kang and Hanna Wills getting some late TV.
