Do GC's Numbers Come From The WC?
No pairings announcement during the 1pm Live From The Solheim Cup but there were at least a couple of golden (brown) nuggets from the commentary:
Dottie Pepper said that of the seven longest players in the event, five of them play for Team U.S.A. so they have an advantage in the length at Rich Harvest Farms. But I thought The Constructivist's numbers conclusively showed Europe had the longer players. Turns out Dottie was quoting from the LPGA Driving Distance leaders, where Pettersen and Gustafson are the only European team members among the top 13. Since four of their players don't play regularly on the LPGA Tour and Matthew has only played three events this year (so she doesn't show up in the stats), that number don't mean diddly. UPDATE: Dottie repeated the 5-of-7 stat during the Opening Ceremony show, so she still doesn't realize the flaw in her analysis.
Ron Sirak was hypothesizing about changes to the Solheim format to bring in the Asians and others, and referred to the last two U.S. victories as being by "sizable margins". I'll admit 16-12 and 15.5-12.5 aren't the thinnest of margins but anybody who thinks those Cups were easy victories is an idiot.
