Saturday Four-ball Live-Blog

We're underway with the Saturday four-ball matches.  The sun is shining brightly, looks like a beautiful day ahead.  If you can't be near a TV, check back here every once in a while to catch up on what's happened.

9:15am - Today is Brittany Lang's 24th birthday and the huge crowd at the first tee just serenaded her.  She tees off in just a couple of minutes along with Angela Stanford.  Creamer's two wins yesterday coupled with Moodie's loss gives Paula the highest all-time Solheim winning percentage (.750, 7-1-4).

9:25am - Alfredsson chipped in for birdie from the thick rough at 1 to go 1-up.

9:40am - Matthew birdied 1 from 35 feet to go 1-up.  Elosegui made a terrific second to the par-5 2nd and made her eagle putt from six feet to go 2-up.  The Euros were ready to play this morning.

9:45am - GC was reporting that Davies had asked out of all action today but Laura just denied that completely.  Kim just teed off to five feet at #3.  Matthew in the water at 2.

9:55am - This is Nocera's third Solheim but she is only playing in her second four-ball match today.  Shots getting a lot more roll today - turf drying out a bit.  Alfredsson missed an eight-footer and Kim made her putt at 3 to cut the Euros lead to 1.  All four matches are underway.

10:00am - Pettersen and Kerr made six-footers for par to halve #1.  Lang had six feet for birdie at 3 and made it to go All Square.

10:10am - Lincicome's approach to four feet at 1.  Hjorth slammed the door on her with a 25-footer for birdie and Brittany caught her hand in it when she missed her putt.  Europe 1-up.  Stanford rolled her tee shot up to about five feet at 3.  After no birdies at #1 in any of the four-ball matches by either team yesterday, Europe got three today.

10:15am - Kerr's third at 2 to within inches (and conceded).  Pettersen had a five-footer to halve and made it.  Luna made a ten-footer for birdie at 3, forcing Stanford to make hers for only a half which she did.

10:20am - Wie made a six-footer for par to win #4.  After losing the first two holes, Kim/Wie have won two in a row to go AS.

10:25am - Kim and Wie each teed to 5 within six feet but Alfredsson matched them.

Star-divide

10:30am - At 2 Hjorth two-putted from 15 feet for birdie.  Lincicome had six feet to halve but missed it right.  Europe 2-up.  Kim and Wie both missed their putts for birdie while Alfredsson made hers at 5.  1-up.

10:40am - At 4, Matthew made par from six feet to halve.  Wie's approach to 6 was stiff.  With no Euro close, this one looks to go All Square with no halves in the first six holes.

10:45am - Hjorth missed a five-footer that would have won 3.  At this moment, Europe is up in two matches and AS in the other two.  Three points this morning would be just what the captain ordered.

10:55am - Stanford nearly sank a birdie chip at 5.  It did save a half for the team.

11:10am - Castrale birdied from 12 feet at 5.  Nordqvist missed left from seven feet so the Yanks go 1-up.  McPherson parred to win 4 and cut the Euros lead to one.  Suddenly the morning's play is even.

11:15am - Wie made birdie from five feet to halve 7.  Lincicome found the water at 5.

11:30am - Castrale had 12 feet to win 6 but missed it right.  Kerr made par to halve it.  Lang's third at 7 to a foot.  At 8, Alfredsson missed right from 10 feet to send the Yanks 1-up.

11:35am - At 7 Matthew made birdie from six feet to halve the hole.

11:40am - McPherson missed from eight feet at 6 and stays down one.

11:50am - Wie hit the hole with her chip at 9 (it skipped past).  Pettersen birdied 7 from 10 feet to go All Square.  Elosegui missed her par from five feet at 9 to go down by two at the turn.

12:05pm - After Nocera two-putted for birdie, Lincicome missed for birdie at 7 from 18 feet so Europe goes 2-up.  Luna clipped a tree at 9 but the monkey gods threw it on the green just a few feet from the pin.

12:15pm - Wie played a brilliant shot from the rough at 10 to six feet and made the putt to go 3-up.  Lang made birdie at 9 from 15 feet.  Now putting to halve, Luna's three-footer went in.

12:30pm - Nocera made par from six feet to halve #8.  Castrale's birdie try to win 9 did a 360 and stayed out.

12:40pm - Wie made birdie from four feet at 11 to go 4-up.  Stanford birdied 10 from 20 feet to go 1-up.

12:50pm - After McPherson missed from 15 feet for birdie at 9, Hjorth made par from four to halve the hole.  With everybody on the back nine now, here is how they stand:

Kim/Wie 4-up thru 11 Alfredsson/Elosegui

Stanford/Lang 1-up thru 10 Matthew/Luna

Castrale/Kerr AS thru 9 Pettersen/Nordqvist

Nocera/Hjorth 2-up thru 9 McPherson/Lincicome

12:55pm - Kim had 10 feet to win 12 but missed right.  Pettersen made par from three feet to win 10 and go 1-up.

1:10pm - Great tee shot by Elosegui at 13 to 3.5 feet, but she pushed the putt right - only a half.  GC is wallowing in the fact that Wie (and oh by the way, Kim too) is playing well and winning big.  Somebody needs to remind them that three other much closer matches are also going on.

1:20pm - Nordqvist had 12 feet for birdie to win 11 but only grazed the edge.  Still 1-up.

1:25pm - Hjorth/Nocera made par to win 10 (still waiting to see it on GC) and go 3-up.  Luna made par from four feet to halve 12.

1:30pm - Wie had 20 feet at 14 to win the match but missed left.  With par putts to extend the match, Elosegui missed from 18 feet and Alfredsson missed from 10.  Kim/Wie win 5&4.

1:35pm - At 12 Kerr holed out from 99 yards to square the match.  Lang drilled a 30-footer for birdie at 13.  Luna missed from 15 feet so the U.S. goes 2-up.

1:50pm - Kerr missed her birdie try right from 20 feet at 13 giving Pettersen the chance to put Europe back on top.  From 10 feet she grazed the right edge.  Still AS.

1:55pm - Matthew had 12 feet to win 14 but missed it right.  Stanford made from eight feet to halve it.  U.S. still 2-up.

2:05pm - Nocera tee shot at 13 to six feet.  Lincicome answered with one to about the same distance.  At 15, Lang in trouble and Stanford in the water.

2:15pm - Lincicome made her birdie from six feet at 13.  Hjorth lipped hers from eight feet and now Europe's lead is two.  Nordqvist made par from four feet to halve 14.  Foursome pairings are out and no Davies for Europe, Creamer in as expected with Inkster again.

2:20pm - At the par-5 15th, Lang recovered from a poor second to give herself 12 feet for birdie but she missed it right.  The half leaves the U.S. 2-up with three to play.

2:30pm - The second match is now playing 16 and they've been at it for 5:15.  Ridiculous.  Lincicome birdied 14 from 18 feet to close within 1.

2:40pm - Pettersen's 25-foot eagle try at 15 went four feet past.  She made the comebacker to go 1-up.  Stanford had 15 feet for birdie at 16 to win the match but missed left.  Matthew made from five feet to halve the hole, but the match is dormie.

2:45pm - McPherson at 15 stuck it to three feet.  Somebody must have told her about my comment in today's foursomes post!

2:55pm - Nordqvist at 16 had 15 feet and dropped it.  Needing to make from 15 feet to avoid going dormie, Castrale missed left.  Europe 2-up with two to go.  McPherson dropped her putt at 15 to go All Square.  Three straight holes won by Lincicome/McPherson.

3:00pm - At 17 Matthew chipped in for birdie to send the match to 18 with the U.S. 1-up.  Hjorth's tee shot to 16 landed less than two feet from the hole.  The foursomes matches have already started.  I'll cover them in another post.

3:05pm - Nordqvist might have just clinched the match with a laser to within 12 feet at 17.  Hjorth's birdie at 16 was conceded so Lincicome had to make from over 30 feet to halve.  She just missed it left so Europe goes 1-up.

3:15pm - Castrale drained it from 15 feet for birdie at 17.  Nordqvist needed to make from 12  to halve the hole (and win the match) but lipped it.  Europe 1-up with one to go.  At 18 Matthew played her third to three feet.  Stanford missed the green and Lang spun hers back too far from the hole.  Suddenly it looks like Europe could get as many as 2.5 points from this session.

3:20pm - Lang wasn't able to birdie from the fringe (about 35 feet).  Luna didn't wait for Matthew to take it - she birdied from 15 feet to steal the half-point away.

3:30pm - Castrale's third at 18 stopped six feet away.  Neither Pettersen nor Nordqvist could get within 15.  Could the U.S. steal that half-point back?  Lincicome parred 17 from four feet to halve and go to 18 down one.  The first foursome match has already played three holes (Moodie/Gustafson are 2-up on Creamer/Inkster) but the second can't start because Pettersen is still on the course.  Why couldn't they send out Match 3 (none of them are still out)?

3:35pm - With putts to win the match, Pettersen missed from 25 feet but Nordqvist nailed it from 18.  Europe wins 2-up.  That match took six hours to play.  Unbelievable.

3:45pm - The last four-ball match finally reaches 18.  Nocera missed the green long with her third and Hjorth landed 40+ feet away.  The door was open.  McPherson landed hers about where Luna just was.  Lincicome's spun back to about 20 feet.

3:55pm - Nocera chipped to three feet.  Hjorth lagged rather poorly to four feet.  Lincicome missed left.  McPherson barely missed right.  Hjorth made her par to win the match 1-up.  The teams are now tied 6-6.

I'm going to take a break for a little bit but will be back in another post to document the foursomes.  Creamer/Inkster are down two thru five holes.
