Saturday Foursomes Live-Blog
When I saw Creamer's recovery shot at 8, I had to start back up. They trail Moodie/Gustafson by two. The other groups just got started (I'll try not to make any more comments today about the slow play - foursomes were much faster yesterday). Europe did what they had to do in the first session - made up some ground to set up the possibility of taking a lead into Sunday. It's up to the Americans to keep them from taking more than a one-point lead (and any lead at all, for that matter).
Gustafson answered Paula's great chip with one of her own - they halved 8. McPherson saved par at 1 to halve Match 2.
4:45pm - Brewerton's approach to 1 landed five feet from the pin. Nocera made the putt to go 1-up. McPherson played her third at 2 very close but Alfredsson will have a reasonable eagle chance.
4:55pm - The eagle didn't go and both teams made birdie at 2.
5:00pm - Brewerton lagged her eagle try at 2 nicely and birdie was conceded. Kim missed her birdie from 12 feet so Europe goes 2-up. Pettersen missed her par putt at 3 so the U.S. goes 1-up.
5:10pm - Kerr saved par from four feet at 3. Pettersen pulled her approach at 4 way over the gallery. Hjorth made birdie from four feet to win 2 and go 1-up. Europe is up in three matches, down in one.
5:20pm - Pressel made par from six feet to win 4 and go 2-up. Wie made one from about five feet to halve 3.
5:25pm - Inkster missed from less than three feet at 11 to drop the U.S. down three. McPherson missed left from eight feet for birdie at 5. Alfredsson couldn't can a birdie from about eight feet so they halved 5. Kim saved a half from 3.5 feet at 4.
5:35pm - Nocera's tee shot at 5 landed five feet from the pin. Didn't have to putt because Kim/Gulbis couldn't save par. Nordqvist missed right for birdie from 10 feet at 4. Wie made a five-footer to halve it. Creamer had eight feet to win 12 but missed it right.
5:40pm - Hjorth's tee shot at 5 ended up two feet away. Wie answered with a laser beam of her own. Pressel/McPherson had two putts to win at 6 and they did. 3-up.
5:45pm - Kerr birdied from four feet at 5 and Nordqvist tapped in to halve. Gulbis played her third at 6 through the green and a microphone stopped it dead. Long way from the hole but quite a break.
5:50pm - Inkster saved a half at 13 from four feet. Brewerton/Nocera had two putts to win 6 and did so to go 4-up.
5:55pm - Pettersen having some kind of physical problem, maybe just cramping. McPherson missed an 18-footer so they drop to 2-up. Kerr drained the birdie from 20 feet at 6 to go All Square.
6:00pm - Creamer had 10 feet to win 14 and missed it badly. Kim is blowing up nearly every hole - just flew the 7th green.
6:05pm - Pettersen must be ok - just hit a great approach into 8. Brewerton missed from eight feet at 7 giving Kim a chance to halve from seven feet. She made it to stop the bleeding. Alfredsson missed from four feet, pulling a putt that would have cut their deficit in half. Pressel made from five feet to stay 2-up.
6:15pm - Per Capt. Nicholas, Pettersen's having a hip flexor issue but "nothing serious". Very ominous clouds off in the distance, hope the weather holds up. Moodie lagged well from across the 15th green to set up a birdie try. Creamer's fourth chipped up but still away. This one's done.
6:20pm - Gustafson made the birdie putt to win 4&3 and give Europe its first lead of the week, 7-6.
6:25pm - Nocera saved par at 8 to halve (Gulbis/Kim still haven't won a hole). Here's how they all stand right now:
|
Gustafson/Moodie won 4&3 Creamer/Inkster McPherson/Pressel 2-up thru 9 Alfredsson/Pettersen Brewerton/Nocera 4-up thru 8 Gulbis/Kim Nordqvist/Hjorth AS thru 7 Kerr/Wie |
6:35pm - Hjorth had seven feet for par at 8 and the ball spun out. U.S. 1-up. Alfredsson made a 15-footer for birdie at 10. McPherson missed from 10 feet and the U.S. is now only 1-up in that match.
6:45pm - Hjorth rolled home an 18-footer for birdie at 9 to go AS. A massive search is going on for Pettersen's ball at 11. Didn't they have to do that for her in singles two years ago?
6:50pm - Brewerton birdied from 15 feet at 10 to go 5-up. They found the ball at 11 and Alfredsson hacked it into a bunker.
6:55pm - Wie played her approach at 10 to a foot. The birdie was conceded. Nocera almost halved from 40 feet. U.S. goes 1-up. At 11 Alfredsson played a great fourth but the Americans have a good try at birdie. But they didn't get it and Pettersen saved par. A great chance lost by the U.S.
7:00pm - Nocera fired one to three feet at 11. Kim pulled hers left. That match is getting embarrassing. Brewerton made the putt to 6-up. They could win the match on the next hole - #12.
7:05pm - Wie with yet another great approach, to six feet at 11. Because of a very short tee shot at 12, Pressel was forced to lay up on the par-4.
7:10pm - Kerr made the birdie putt at 11 to go 2-up. Alfredsson's long putt at 12 came up way short, opening the door. Pressel had 10 feet to save par but missed left. Pettersen had eight feet to get All Square but lipped it out.
7:20pm - Kim made (probably) her first good shot of the afternoon, to three feet at 12. Gulbis sank the putt for their first win of the match. Still down by 5. McPherson had a 20-footer to win 13 and made it to go 2-up.
7:30pm - Kerr had about 20 feet for birdie but left it four feet short. Nordqvist from about the same distance cozied it up to tap-in range. Wie made the putt to halve. At 13 Gulbis missed right from 15 feet. Nocera made par from 3.5 feet to go dormie.
7:35pm - Hjorth's tee shot at 13 landed about eight feet away. Pressel made par from four feet at 14 to stay 2-up.
7:40pm - Kerr missed right from 15 feet for birdie at 13. Nordqvist's attempt missed left. The U.S. did not concede so Hjorth had to make from 2.5 to halve. At 15 Alfredsson went for the green in two and roped it to six feet. Brewerton had two putts at 14 to win the match and got the first one close. Europe wins 5&4 and leads 8-6.
7:45pm - Pressel's third at 15 rolled to about six feet. Pettersen's eagle putt was perfect to cut the margin to one.
7:55pm - Alfredsson's tee shot at 16 found the back-left fringe. McPherson's went to about eight feet from the pin. At 14 Wie had 12 feet for par but just missed left. Hjorth had four feet for par and to win the hole and missed right. Kerr made from four feet to halve the hole and stay 2-up. Pressel made the birdie putt at 16 to go 2-up and dormie.
8:05pm - Nordqvist found the bunker with her second at the par-5 15th. Kerr had 186 for her second and missed the green right. At 17 McPherson recovered nicely from the rough to reach the green. Alfredsson landed on the right edge of the green. Wie played the third from a bunker beautifully to 2.5 feet. Without her today, the U.S. would be in real trouble. Hjorth made a fine bunker shot too, to five feet.
8:10pm - Pettersen drilled a 30-footer for birdie at 17 to keep hope alive. Pressel had 15 feet to halve but missed left. Nordqvist and Kerr tapped in their birdies to halve. Still 2-up with three to go. At 16 Kerr's tee shot to about 12 feet. Nordqvist played to about five. It's starting to get pretty dark.
8:15pm - Wie's putt at 16 missed left. Hjorth made birdie to draw within one. Pettersen went for the 18th green but came up a little short.
8:20pm - McPherson's third at 18 landed about six feet from the pin. Alfredsson's chipped third was short by 20 feet. Hjorth found a fairway bunker at 17. Wie drove just into the primary rough.
8:25pm - Pettersen has to make - otherwise the U.S. would have two putts to win the match. She barely missed right. The par was conceded so the U.S. won 1-up.
8:30pm - Nordqvist had to lay up at 17. Kerr's lie looked good but she found the water just in front of the green. Ouch. Hjorth pulled her third to the back-left of the green. Wie's fourth (from the rough unfortunately) was over the green.
8:35pm - Nordqvist came up five feet short, giving the Yanks some hope. From a bad lie, Kerr rolled it just by the hole and stopped four feet past. Hjorth's bogey putt to win the hole (yes) missed on the high side. To halve the hole with a double-bogey, Wie dropped it to go dormie.
8:40pm - Kerr got lucky off the 18th tee - off the trees but back into the fairway. Europe is in the fairway too. Hjorth went for the green but came up short into the thick grass on a slope next to a bunker. Wie went for it too but hit a little fat and came up short (but safe).
8:45pm - Kerr pitched her third past the hole to about 15 feet. Nordqvist had a terrible lie but chipped it up to six feet.
8:50pm - Wie's putt to win the match grazed the right edge. To halve the match, Hjorth missed left. U.S.A. wins 1-up and is tied 8-8 going to Sunday singles.
