Sunday Singles Live-Blog

With 12 of the 28 matches played on the final day, we knew it would come down to the singles right?  The stats say the U.S. should win today but the stats won't be making the shots.  I decided not to try picking the winners of each match but will say this - if Pettersen, Alfredsson and Hjorth (three of Europe's best) can all win today, the Americans are in trouble.

11:05am - Another beautiful day at Rich Harvest Farms.  Sunny with just a little breeze at this point.  Pettersen is looking for her first career singles win.  Creamer is 2-0-0 in singles.  Both hit the first fairway, Pettersen much farther of course.

11:10am - Daniel says she wanted her best putters at the end of the lineup.  That strategy could really pay off if it's still close at the end.

11:20pm - Creamer missed a 10-footer for par and starts down 1.

11:30pm - Creamer reached the 2nd green in two (just barely through).  Stanford birdied 1 from 10 feet to go 1-up.

12:45pm - Had to surrender the computer for awhile - should be good for the duration.  Here's how they stand:

Pettersen AS thru 6 Creamer

Stanford 2-up thru 6 Brewerton

Wie 2-up thru 5 Alfredsson

Davies 1-up thru 5 Lang

Nocera 1-up thru 4 Inkster

Matthew 1-up thru 3 McPherson

Lincicome 1-up thru 3 Gustafson

Luna 1-up thru 1 Castrale

Elosegui AS thru 1 Kim

The highlights while I was away - Wie and Alfredsson each had three feet for eagle at 2 but Helen missed hers.  Pettersen has made some nice putts to halve holes.  Davies putted from off the green at 2 and made it for birdie.  Hjorth just won the first over Kerr so Europe leads in five matches, the U.S. leads in three.

Star-divide

12:50pm - Wie went 3-up with a birdie at 6.  Davies went 2-up with a birdie at 6.  Nocera conceded at 5 to square her match with Inkster.

12:55pm - Kim birdied 2 from five feet to go 1-up.  McPherson won 4 with a bogey to go All Square with Matthew.

1:00pm - Brewerton bogeyed 7 to go down by three to Stanford.

1:05pm - Now that everybody's on the course, it'll could be pretty crazy for the next couple of hours.  Castrale bogeyed 3 to go two down to Luna.  Pettersen missed from three feet at 8, halved the hole and still AS.  Kerr birdied 2 to go AS with Hjorth.

1:10pm - Moodie birdied 1 from eight feet to go 1-up on Gulbis.  The Euros really took care of business on 1 the last two days.  Pettersen used the entire hole from five feet to halve 9.  The LPGA.com board is really loading slowly today.  Team U.S.A. leads in four matches, Europe in three, five are All Square.

1:15pm - Alfredsson hit her approach stiff at 8. Birdie and hole conceded, Wie 2-up.  Lang saved a half at 7 with a five footer.  McPherson doubled 6 to go down one to Matthew.  Hjorth birdied 3 to go 1-up on Kerr.

1:20pm - Creamer drained one from 30 feet for birdie at 10.  Pettersen had about 12 to halve but missed it right.  Creamer 1-up.  Pressel holed out from the bunker to go 1-up on Nordqvist.

1:25pm - It's taking over 60 seconds sometimes to reload the leaderboard page.  The traffic must be pretty high at LPGA.com today.  Nocera birdied from four feet to win 7 and go 1-up on Inkster.  Luna parred 5 to go 3-up on Castrale.

1:30pm - Kim missed her par putt from 10 feet to lose 4 and go AS with Elosegui.  Davies bogeyed 8 and is now 1-up.  Wie missed right from five feet at 9 to drop her second straight hole.  Still 1-up however.

1:45pm - Kim made from eight feet to win 5 and go 1-up.  Nocera birdied 8 from 40 feet to go 1-up.  Pettersen halved 11 with a six-footer.  Davies doubled 8 but is still 1-up on Lang.  Matthew birdied 7 to go 2-up on McPherson.  Hjorth birdied 4 to go 2-up on Kerr.  Nordqvist birdied 4 to square things with Pressel.  Europe leads in six while the U.S. leads in five.

1:50pm - Kerr made par to win 5 and close to within one.  Luna bogeyed 6 but still leads Castrale by two.  Pressel birdied 5 to go 1-up on Nordqvist.

1:55pm - Nocera missed for par from five feet at 9 so Inkster's two-foot par won the hole to draw within one.  Kim tapped in for par at 6 to go 2-up.  Lang bogeyed 9 to fall down two.  Creamer went 2-up with a par at 12.  Davies birdied 10 to go 3-up on Lang.

2:15pm - Wie missed from five feet to lose 11 and go AS.  Elosegui made eagle at 7 to draw within one.  Luna bogeyed 8 but stays 1-up.  Hjorth birdied 6 but Kerr eagled 7 so that match is still Europe 1-up.  Davies bogeyed 11 (after reaching the par-5 in two!) but still leads by two.

2:20pm - Pettersen missed for par from six feet to lose 14 and go down three.  Stanford birdied 13 to go 4-up.  Elosegui parred 8 from four feet to square her match with Kim.

2:25pm - Luna's approach at 9 was to three feet.  The hole was conceded to put her 2-up.

2:30pm - Lincicome made a five-footer to win 10 and go 2-up.  After bogeying 12 to cut her lead to one, Davies nearly aced 13.  Stanford birdied 14 from seven feet to win her match 5&4.

2:35pm - Kerr had two putts to win 8 - the win squares her match with Hjorth.  Creamer birdied 15 from 10 feet to halve and go dormie.  Luna birdied 10 to go 3-up.  Davies tapped in her birdie at 13 to go 2-up.

2:40pm - Moodie birdied 7 to go 2-up over Gulbis.

2:45pm - Lang made birdie from four feet to win 14 and cut Davies' lead to one.  Creamer had two putts at 16 to end the match and cozied her first to a foot.  Creamer wins 3&2 and the U.S leads 10-8.  Wie drove 305 at 15 and reached the front edge of the green with her second.  Lincicome missed from eight feet at 11 but still leads 1-up.

2:50pm - Inkster bogeyed 12 to fall two back of Nocera.  Elosegui made par from five feet to halve 10.  Alfredsson missed from 20 feet at 15 to put Wie 1-up.  Gulbis bogeyed 8 to go down three to Moodie.

3:00pm - Hjorth saved a half at 10 from 12 feet.  Lang just missed a 15-footer at 15 and is now down 2 to Davies.  Alfreddson had 12 feet to halve 16 but missed to put Wie dormie.  Gulbis birdied 9 but still trails by two.  Pressel birdied 10 from 15 feet to go 2-up.

3:05pm - Inkster birdied 14 from six feet to draw within one.

3:10pm - Elosegui needed to chip in at 11 and missed so Kim goes 1-up.  McPherson's approach to 14 was to four feet but she missed the birdie right.  Matthew made her par from four feet and stays 2-up.

3:15pm - Gustafson bogeyed 13 to go down two to Lincicome.  Alfredsson had two putts to win 17 - that match goes to 18.  Moodie drained at 15-footer at 10 to go 3-up.

3:20pm - The U.S. currently leads 10-8 and leads in four matches.  Europe leads in five matches with one All Square.  Like I said last night, 15-13 U.S.A. would make me very happy.

3:25pm - Castrale birdied 13 from four feet to draw within two.  Kim saved a half at 12 from six feet, stays 1-up.  Inkster saved a half at 15 from eight feet to stay one down and then roped her tee shot at 16 to six feet.  Lang had two putts to win 17 and nearly only needed one.  Going to 18 down one.

3:30pm - Alfredsson's eagle try at 18 stopped a couple of inches away.  Inkster made her birdie at 16 to square her match.  Wie had two putts from about 30 feet to win the match and rolled the first to two feet.  Wie wins 1-up.  The U.S. now leads 11-8.

3:35pm - Kerr made par from three feet at 12 to go 1-up.  Matthew birdied 15 to go 3-up and dormie.

3:40pm - Matthew made a six-footer at 16 to to halve the hole and defeat McPherson 3&2.  Luna took 14 to go 3-up on Castrale.  Nocera had six feet to halve 17 but missed it right.  Inkster is 1-up and dormie.  Pressel saved par from five feet at 12 to stay 2-up.

3:45pm - At 18 Davies found the hazard and finally reached the green in five.

3:50pm - Kim saved par from eight feet and Elosegui missed from five at 14, giving Kim a 2-up lead.  Lang had two putts from 15 feet to win 18 and only needed one.  A half-point given away by Europe.  The U.S. leads 11.5 to 9.5.  Nordqvist won 13 to draw within one of Pressel.

3:55pm - Moodie bogeyed 12 but still leads by two.  Castrale's birdie try at 15 stopped at the rim.  Luna is 3-up and dormie.

4:00pm - Inkster looked like she was in a cornfield at 18.  Like Davies, she played four and wasn't on the green yet.  Lincicome made from four feet at 16 to win 3&2.  Moodie had two putts to win 13 - now 3-up.  Inkster bogeyed 18 so the hole was conceded.  A half-point for each makes the tally 13 to 10 U.S.A.  The other five matches show the U.S. up 3-2.

4:05pm - Inkster just said this was her last Solheim Cup and she would love to be a captain someday.  Kim missed for par from 10 feet at 15 but remains 1-up.

4:10pm - The U.S. only needs to hold onto one of the three matches they lead in (or halve two of them) to retain the Cup.  That's good because they are only 1-up in each of them.  Luna just halved 16 to beat Castrale 3&2.  The 11th point for the Euros just officially squashed my 18-10 prediction.  Easy come, easy go.  Nordqvist halved 14 from five feet.

4:15pm - Hjorth had two putts to win 15 so she's All Square with Kerr.  Nordqvist found the water at 15 with a lay up second - ugh.  Elosegui saved par from eight feet at 16.  Kim had seven feet for birdie to go dormie and made it.

4:20pm - Gulbis won 14 to draw within two.  Pressel had two putts to win 15 and went 2-up with three to go.

4:25pm - Elosegui stuck her approach at 17 to four feet.  Kerr and Hjorth halved 16.  Pressel missed the green short at 16 and Nordqvist pulled hers left.

4:30pm - Kim's 25-footer at 17 to win the match and clinch the Cup missed left.  Elosegui's putt to extend the match was true.  Pressel chipped at 16 to a foot.  Nordqvist chipped about eight feet past.  All she can do is make to halve and go dormie and since Kim is already dormie, the Cup has been retained by the U.S.

4:35pm - Nordqvist missed her putt so Pressel wins 3&2 and the U.S. wins outright (the lead is 14-11 with Kim dormie).

4:40pm - Kerr birdied 17 to go 1-up.

4:45pm - Gulbis birdied 16 to draw within one of Moodie.

4:50pm - Kim's third to 18 landed about 20 feet away.  Elosegui is laying at least three way right so it appears Kim will win her match.

4:55pm - Elosegui conceded the hole so Kim wins 2-up.

5:00pm - Gulbis and Moodie wanted to declare their match halved at the 18th tee but the rules require them to finish.  Being 1-up, Moodie could concede the 18th hole to halve it.  Maybe she'll do that.  Up at the green, Kerr conceded Hjorth's birdie (even though Maria was about 15 feet away) so that match ended All Square.

5:05pm - Apparently Moodie did what I suggested.  The final match was declared All Square and the U.S. wins 16-12.

I'm getting a bad feeling

The Europeans might pull the upset. This is going to come down to the last matches. Would Beth Daniel wish she selected someone other than Natalie Gulbis for the last group?

Looks like the Americans will squeak by.
