Solheim Cup Recap
The United States won its third straight Solheim Cup competition by the score of 16 to 12. It is the eighth victory for the U.S. in eleven tries at this event. Team U.S.A. tallied eight points in the Sunday singles matches after beginning the day tied 8-8. Morgan Pressel clinched at least a dormie during play at the 16th, which guaranteed the 14th point for the U.S.A.
I documented how it all went down in my Live Blog this afternoon. Michelle Wie completed an undefeated week with a 1-up victory over Helen Alfredsson. Angela Stanford earned the day's first point with a dominating 5&4 win over Becky Brewerton. Paula Creamer wore Suzann Pettersen down 3&2. Brittany Lincicome never trailed while beating Sophie Gustafson 3&2. Pressel and Christina Kim never trailed either but were forced to close strong to win 3&2 over Anna Nordqvist and 2-up over Tania Elosegui.
Four matches were halved (two of them after the outcome was decided), two of them because two veterans couldn't hold themselves together at 18. Laura Davies and Juli Inkster each surrendered a half-point with shaky play, although Davies' struggle probably hurt Europe worse since Laura had led Brittany Lang all day long. Inkster had just taken her first lead of the day over Gwladys Nocera the hole prior before letting hers slip.
Europe's two outstanding performances came from one expected source - Catriona Matthew's 3&2 win over Kristy McPherson - and one unexpected - Diana Luna's 3&2 win over Nicole Castrale.
A lot will be written and said about Michelle Wie's performance this week but I'd like to point out that today's outcome was still very much in doubt when Wie took holes 15 and 16 to go dormie. She held on to win that pivotal match over one of Europe's best. Michelle wasn't the only player to carry the U.S. to victory but she handled more than her share of the load.
I'll have more in an Epilogue tomorrow. For now, I must rest my typing fingers.
