Solheim Cup Epilogue

Solheim2009_medium

As expected, the Internet is filled this morning with articles announcing the "coming of age" of Michelle Wie.  Her performance this weekend was brilliant and she deserves all of the accolades.  Let's everybody try not to turn her into the female Tiger Woods just yet, though.  She's got a lot of things to accomplish before we should start saying things like that.

While I'm on the subject - I understand that GC pays Rich Lerner to wax philosophic on air but I could have done with about three fewer of his pieces on Wie over the three day event.  We get it guys - you don't have to ram it down our throats.  Otherwise I thought Golf Channel did a great job with the marathon coverage.

Star-divide

The records for the individual players were:

Wie                   3-0-1

Pressel            2-0-1

Creamer          3-1-0

Kim                  3-1-0

Lang                1-0-2

Kerr                  2-1-1

Lincicome       2-2-0

Gulbis              1-1-1

Inkster              1-2-1

Stanford           1-2-1

McPherson      1-3-0

Castrale           0-3-0

Nocera             3-0-1

Hjorth               2-1-2

Luna                 1-0-1

Nordqvist         2-2-0

Brewerton        2-2-0

Matthew           1-1-2

Moodie             1-1-1

Elosegui           1-2-0

Gustafson        1-3-0

Alfredsson       1-3-0

Pettersen         1-4-0

Davies              0-1-1

Much like for Wie, we can no longer say Gwladys Nocera has never done anything on the world stage.  I won't be calling her "oft-maligned" any more.  For the second straight Cup, Team Europe's captain gave one of her rookies only two starts and may regret not giving her more.  Like Linda Wessberg did in 2007, Diana Luna went 1-0-1.  Pettersen, Alfredsson and Gustafson - three players who made the team because of their high Rolex Rankings - went a combined 3-10-0 (some of those were in the same matches, of course).  Given that, it's amazing this thing was so close.

Wie wasn't the only star for the U.S.  Pressel was almost as good on a course that should have devoured her.  Creamer, Kim, Lang and Kerr did themselves proud.  Lincicome exorcised the demons of her '07 performance.  Inkster gutted out three points, despite not playing like Juli Inkster at any time.  Stanford kept her weekend from being lost with a dominating performance on Sunday.  McPherson and Castrale didn't really have it - Kristy couldn't make a putt and Castrale was having trouble with ball-striking.

Some folks aren't too enthralled with Christina Kim's antics on the course.  Even though I'm a traditionalist, I think golf could use a little more fire so I am fine with Kim pumping up the crowd and dancing to celebrate a win.  Tania Elosegui threw a little back at her during their match Sunday so it works both ways as far as the players are concerned.  Just be sure to pull up short of trash-talking, girls - you might lose me there.

Random Thoughts

I think the entire Golf Channel week long, wire to wire coverage we saw was unprecedented in women’s golf, maybe for any women’s sporting event. I’m not nieve enough to think it was some new found love, it was about setting up their contract with the LPGA, and I think that is why they over hyped Wie all week.

Their was a Senior men’s Championship this week, won by Brad Bryant. i sort of remember the guy.

That said, they were right about Wie’s game, it was fantastic this week. If Michelle could somehow find the courage to step out of the controlled bubble she’s been living in, push all but the necessary out of her hair, I think she can play this game. Keep Dave Stockton.

My favorite play of the week was K-mac and Bam on 16 in the foursomes, Friday, at 16. Bam hit it in the crap short left on the par three in the foursomes. Bam and Kristy are down there and decide they can’t get it out. Their opponents were up above in some thick rough. Bam says we could take unplayable and make a one. (the match is Euro dormie three!)

K-mac “I’ve made four 1’s in my life Bam” So she starts walking back to the tee, looks back, “stay here Bam, you take it outta the hole for me.”

So she hits it again, draws it in right at the hole stops about 6 feet short right. So while she is walking back down, the Euros, chunk their pitch, Bam makes the four, and the Euros have to make a three footer for bogey four to win the match!

My cerebral play of the week was Lincicome’s 290 yard drive at 12 (Snead’s Crotch). There is no place for a sane person to hit in the fairway there. That’s why Snead wanted that tree in the fairway taken down. Davies was about the toughness of the course? “Yea, I hit a ball in the fairway and had to put a 40 yard hook on a six iron.”

If you can clear the dog leg trees on the left, your target area is 3-4 times as wide. Lincicome clears the trees, and left it just short of the center bunker in the fairway.

Between the Wie and Creamer hype, and all the rah rah cheerleading, it was missed that Stanford went out and put some serious kick __s on Becky Brewerton. I think all that on course cheer leading makes for great TV, but it helps your opponent. Instead of focusing on the crowd, it just get’s your opponent intensely focussed on shutting you up. I think some some of the matches reflected this phenomenon throughout the week. When you are solidly ahead, don’t motivate your opponent. Just silently put the hammer down.

Holes 12, 13, and 14, turned several matches this week, due to just close proximity to each other and crowd noise. The USA played to it. They knew about it. The 12th green, is close, to 13 tee, the amphitheater short par three, wraps around and comes back to 12 green. To compound the problem for the Euros, the crowd cheered every shot so they had no idea what was going on. It reminds me of Seve at the 86 Masters, standing in the fairway at 15 with a four iron in his hand, in control of the tournament, listen to the the Bear roars up ahead at 16. Then flailing it in the middle of the pond.

I love your blog Hounddog. Great work!

The LPGA needs to include the Asians in the Solheim Cup format.

Even if they manage to resurect the Lexus Cup in 2010 it won’t be enough.

There is an even greater need for a U.S. vs Asia format. The Solheim Cup was an excellent forum for marketing the personalities of the U.S. and European players. It would help sell the LPGA if the Asian players who dominate the top 30 got the same treatment. The audience would tune in to see the Americans and get exposed to the Asian players on a more personal level. Having the event in the U.S. every other year would increase the visability of the event. Place it near a large U.S. city with a large Asian population suchas NY, LA, Atlanta or Seatle. The drama and rating for the event greatly increase when it is live and there is spirited coverage and support for both sides. Sunday’s drama would not have been compelling on a tape delay. If you wake up to find the U.S. lost, are you really going to watch 8+ hours of coverage? That would defeat the purpose of the event.
