Safeway Classic - 1st Round
Beth Bader fired a 64 to take a one shot lead at the Safeway Classic. Seon Hwa Lee and Anna Nordqvist are tied for second while Angela Stanford, Janice Moodie, Candie Kung and Stacy Prammanasudh are tied for fourth, two shots behind.
Scoring was very good on the first day with 24 rounds in the 60s and 51 rounds under par. Bader birdied six times in one eight-hole stretch (9-16) to post her best round since 2003. Lee and Nordqvist each birdied seven times against no bogeys. Prammanasudh's 66 was only her second round in the 60s all year. The other numbers after the jump:

67 Ai Miyazato, Michele Redman, Moira Dunn 68 Yani Tseng, Suzann Pettersen, Michelle Wie, Christina Kim 68 Natalie Gulbis, Jeong Jang, Jennifer Rosales 69 Cristie Kerr, Se Ri Pak, Mika Miyazato, Il Mi Chung, Carri Wood 70 Lorena Ochoa, Eun Hee Ji, Helen Alfredsson, Sun Young Yoo, Laura Diaz 71 Kristy McPherson, Laura Davies, Anja Monke, Pornanong Phatlum 71 Sophie Gustafson, Samantha Richdale, Russy Gulyanamitta, Irene Cho 72 Lindsey Wright, Stacy Lewis, Sarah Lee, Jimin Kang, Giulia Sergas 73 Na Yeon Choi, Song-Hee Kim, Brittany Lang, Ji Young Oh, Amy Yang 74 Jiyai Shin, In-Kyung Kim, Karrie Webb, Morgan Pressel, Hee Young Park 75 Jee Young Lee, Danielle Downey, Eunjung Yi, Joo Mi Kim 76 Wendy Ward, Inbee Park, Carin Koch, Rachel Hetherington, Taylor Leon 77 Catriona Matthew, Hee-Won Han, Brittany Lincicome, Katherine Hull |
Quite a few stars came out flat, including some who didn't go through the Solheim wringer last week like Jiyai Shin, Karrie Webb and Hee-Won Han. Webb shot 74 despite an ace at the 184-yard 5th hole. Great to see Stacy P, Laura Diaz, Jeong Jang and Seon Hwa put up good numbers today after their recent issues.
Paula Creamer is having stomach problems again, which forced her to withdraw before teeing off. Her DNS allowed Thai rookie Pornanong Phatlum to make the field and she made the most of it, posting a 71 which gives her a good chance to make this afternoon's cut and make some LPGA money for the first time this year. Jane Park withdrew during the round - I hope her back isn't still causing trouble.

what happened to the tv Sat. afternoon?
supposed to be on espn2 5-7pm, not so here in Boston. Did it get rained out?
The WNBA game right before it on ESPN2 went into OT so they started Safeway coverage on ESPN Classic. That was great but the b-ball game ended about 5:10 and for no apparent reason they waited until 5:50 to switch over to ESPN2. So all of you folks who don’t have Classic got screwed. Goodbye ESPN – don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
