Thailand - Final Round

Ai Miyazato fired a 63 and won the Honda PTT LPGA Thailand by one stroke over Suzann Pettersen.  It is her second career victory, both of which have come in the last eight months.  Yani Tseng finished third at -15, six shots behind the leader while Karrie Webb and Cristie Kerr were tied for fourth at -13.

Miyazato began the day tied for third but was six shots behind Pettersen.  Playing in the third group from last, Ai started off in the wrong direction with a bogey at 2.  She birdied 3 but through five holes she was still only -12 overall and six shots down.  Birdie at 6, eagle at 7 and birdie at 9 sent her through the turn at -16.  In the final group Pettersen was playing steadily with two birdies and no bogeys through 7.  She still led by four.  None of her other challengers had made a run - playing partner Song-Hee Kim had fallen a shot further back and would fade to T6 while Tseng was only keeping pace five strokes back.

Miyazato continued her run with birdies at 10 and 11, reaching -18.  Pettersen finally stumbled with a bogey at 9 (her first of the entire week) which reduced her lead to only one.  She rebounded with a birdie at 10 but Ai answered with one at 13.  Tseng ran off three in a row (10, 11 and 12) to reach -17 but that would be all she could muster.  Yani closed out with five pars and a lethal double-bogey at 17.  Miyazato birdied 15 to tie for the lead.  Pettersen parred 11 through 15 but when she missed an eight-footer for par at 16, she trailed for the first time.  Ai parred 17 and chipped in to birdie the par-5 18th and open up a two-shot margin.  Suzann only parred 17 and, needing an eagle to tie, only made birdie at 18 to fall short by one.

So...the fave of the Mostly Harmless crowd gets her 2010 Player of the Year bid off to the best possible start.  I'm sure that party will last as long as the one for her Evian victory last summer!  The coverage on GC airs this afternoon at 4:30 EST - I'll add any observations to tomorrow's Epilogue.  In the meantime:  Congratulations Ai-sama!

I can’t see how Pettersen choked this one away. She shot -2 70 and lost by a shot to a player who shot the lowest round of anyone that week. Pettersen didn’t lose this one as much as Miyazato flat out won it.
