LPGA Championship - 3rd Round
Cristie Kerr extended her lead to six eight shots on Saturday at the LPGA Championship. Mika Miyazato is in second place at -7, Azahara Munoz and Jimin Kang are tied for third second at -5 while Jiyai Shin and Song-Hee Kim are tied for fifth at -4.
Kerr didn't have Low Round again today but she only missed it by one as she posted 69. She's still not hitting many fairways (only five today and 18 out of 42 for the week) and took three bogeys in the process. Each time she did, however, she rebounded immediately. Bogey at 2 was followed by birdies at 3 and 4. Bogey at 10 was followed by three straight birdies. Bogey at 14 was followed by birdie at 15. That resiliency gave nobody a chance to pick up ground. Miyazato got within three when Cristie bogeyed 10 but Mika's birdie at 11 was cancelled out by Kerr's. Miyazato bogeyed 13 and 14 to fall back to -6 but birdied 17 to get one back. UPDATE: Miyazato double-bogeyed 18 to give Kerr an eight-shot lead going to Sunday. Munoz was -6 through 13 but played the final five in +1. Kang birdied 15 and 16 to go -5 but went no further. Nobody else reached -5 all day.
Song-Hee Kim's 69 featured a hole-out eagle at the par-4 16th. Shin endured a roller-coaster front nine with four birdies and two bogeys which evened out with all pars on the back, all adding up to 70. Karrie Webb, Catriona Matthew and Sarah Jane Smith moved into the Top 10 with 69s of their own. Inbee Park started the day tied for second but bogeyed 1 and doubled 4. The resulting 75 dropped her to -2, tied for eighth with Webb, Matthew, Smith and In-Kyung Kim. Morgan Pressel was the only player in the field to gain ground on the leader. A 68 leaves her E T19.
The coverage on Golf Channel begins at 4pm EDT.
