Top 70 - July 2010

Five events have been played - two of them majors - since the players were last ranked.  As you might expect, there have been quite a few changes.  2010 performance counts for 60% of the rating and there are now two rookies listed (in bold), one of them reaching the Top 40.  Notes follow the jump.

Star-divide

Ai Miyazato and Cristie Kerr are literally tied for #1 and have been since Kerr won the LPGA Championship.  I give Miyazato the nod because she has four victories to Kerr's two.  Jiyai Shin is clinging to third with three players breathing down her neck.  Time's a-wasting on her POY chances - she needs a victory, and soon.

Lorena Ochoa remains in the Top 10 and will probably stay in the Top 25 for the rest of the season, thanks to her performance in five starts prior to retirement (she's still in the money list Top 30).  She will make a sixth start in November at the Ochoa Invitational so her final 2010 numbers will change a little bit.

Inbee Park makes the most significant jump in the rankings, moving up to #17 from 31.  Park has four straight Top 10 finishes and seven of them in eleven starts this year, the fourth best percentage on Tour.  Other big jumps were made by Stacy Lewis (+9 to #26), M.J. Hur (+16 to #29), Shanshan Feng (+11 to #33), Christina Kim (+15 to #35) and Azahara Munoz (+29 to #40).  Na On Min makes the highest entry into the rankings at #50, based on her T8 finish at State Farm and T19 at the LPGA Championship.

When so many are moving up, many others must move down.  The free-fallers include Ji Young Oh, Pat Hurst (both out completely from #38 and 40 respectively), Se Ri Pak (-20 to #49) and Vicky Hurst (-26 to #62).  Eun-Hee Ji, last year's U.S. Open champ (Did you notice I haven't yet mentioned the negative connotations of Sunday's victory?  I'm trying to shatter that trend by not speaking of it), has dropped out of the Top 30.  Seon Hwa Lee has done likewise, making this her first appearance outside of my Top 30 since I began ranking the players in July 2006.  That group of elite players is now down to four members - Lorena Ochoa, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Karrie Webb.

Michelle Wie at 14 ? With her steady slide down the leaderboard since her win last year ? That sounds like optimism based on potential. Paige McKenzie, Vicky Hurst, and Sandra Gal have been playing better than Wie lately.

What has happened to Mi Hyun Kim ? She looked like she was starting to roll last year, and now she’s disappearing.

I guess the Rolex system also has too much “optimism based on potential”, since they rank Wie #12. Like their system, mine takes results (I also use stats that Rolex doesn’t refer to) to make rankings.

You must not have noticed that Wie’s missed cut at the U.S Open was her first of the year and only her fourth finish outside the Top 30 this year. Compared to Mackenzie (3 MC, 9 30+ finishes), Hurst (4 MC, 10 30+) and Gal (5 MC, 10 30+), Michelle is kicking ass. What events have you been watching to think otherwise?

lol – hey – you already know my opinion on the Rolex system

I’m looking at her results this year – she has 11 starts – 6 finishes outside the top 20 – 4 outside the top 45. She’s not playing well and not actually looking like she’s going to be getting better any time soon. Last year, she at least played a strong final round to climb the leaderboard.

yeah, well, even this calendar year she's #14 in Golfweek's system

http://mlyhlss.blogspot.com/2010/07/best-of-lpga-july-2010-edition.html

Fact is, the top 8 players have been so dominant between them over the last couple of years (9 if you count Lorena in that bunch), you don’t have to be setting the world on fire to be a top 20 player these days. But it helps. Wie’s definitely in danger of dropping down all the rankings if she keeps playing like she has the past month. If you look at HD’s performance stats spreadsheet, her putting has been atrocious—much worse than previous seasons.

What happened?

Since her return to golf after the birth of her son, Mi Hyun Kim’s putter and short game have been rusty.
Also. the rumor is that Se Ri Pak is taking an indefinite break from golf.

How about that – I didn’t know MH had a baby…didn’t know she was married ! (dang – and I was hoping she’d be looking for a caddy/hubby sometime) :-)

Another indefinite break for Se Ri, eh ? She’ll be missed. Maybe going to concentrate on her clothing line ?

dude, you didn't read my lil' ol' interview w/Kimmie?

http://mlyhlss.blogspot.com/2010/06/quick-bites-from-wegmanslpga.html

From what I saw on the driving range and course at Locust Hill, she’s still got the desire to compete….

http://mlyhlss.blogspot.com/2010/06/on-following-mi-hyun-kim-mina-harigae.html

But she definitely needs her wedges and putter “on” to compete. She’s even a shorter hitter than I am!
