U.S. Girls Junior Amateur - I've Seen That Girl Before!
My Saturday was kinda busy so I only got to see the last couple of minutes of the Evian coverage. With nothing else pressing to watch, I left the channel tuned to GC and the finals of the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur from Pinehurst, NC came on. The two finalists were 17-year-old Doris Chen and 15-year-old Katelyn Dambaugh...
That second name rang a very loud bell in my head. Two years ago I attended the Ginn Tribute near Charleston, SC. While riding the shuttle to the course for the Wednesday pro-am, I started talking with the only other person on board. He was there to watch his niece Katelyn Dambaugh play in the pro-am with Lorena Ochoa. Unfortunately Lorena withdrew that morning (her uncle had passed away) so Katelyn got to play with Sophie Gustafson instead. I passed by that group on #5 and found her tee shot lying in the middle of the fairway very close to Sophie's ball. I found KD's uncle in the rather sizeable gallery - he said both of them had taken 3-wood. Not too bad, a 13-year-old matching Sophie Gustafson off the tee.
Dambaugh played very well Saturday but 36 holes in the sweltering heat seemed to wear her down as she lost to Chen 3&2. She will be playing in the U.S. Women's Amateur in Charlotte August 9-15 (like Pinehurst, not too far from her home) so watch for her. One more thing - Katelyn is a lefty! If she only wasn't a Duke fan...
