Avnet LPGA Classic - 3rd Round
Song-Hee Kim and Lexi Thompson are tied for the lead entering the final round of the Avnet LPGA Classic. Amy Yang is in third place at -6, one shot behind while Suzann Pettersen, Maria Hjorth and Karen Stupples are tied for fourth at -5.
Thompson - in her first LPGA event of the year and on a sponsor's exemption at that - shot 67 in moving from T16 to the lead. Birdies at 9, 13, 14 and 16 propelled Lexi to -7. Kim birdied 15 and 16 to join her. Despite not being able to buy a birdie putt, Yang ended the day as she started - one shot back at -6. Hjorth played the back nine in 32, highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 16th. Overnight leader Sandra Gal was hanging tough - still -7 through 10 with two birdies and two bogeys - but her putter went south. Misses from two feet at 11 and three at 18 led to +3 over her final eight holes. Sandra is still in the hunt though at -4 T7 with Hee Kyung Seo (Round of the Day 65), Na Yeon Choi, Angela Stanford and Paige Mackenzie. If I also mention the quartet at -3 of Juli Inkster, Anna Nordqvist, Christina Kim and Stacy Lewis (three birdies in her last seven to come back from an awful 41 on the front), I've listed all fifteen players in my newly minted four-shot Magic Window. We'll see how that fairs in its first public trial.
Oh, the Sunday story lines! Can Thompson shatter the 59-year-old record for youngest LPGA winner? If so, does that compel the LPGA to offer her membership at age 16? Can Kim overcome her Sunday contention complex to win her first Tour title? Can one of the European triumvirates in fourth place step forward - they have each done so multiple times in their careers. Or can somebody outside the four-show window but inside the old six-shot standard (like say, Grace Park -2 T16) shoot 65 and watch the final groups take their best shot?
