Sybase Match Ups

The first-round draw was held yesterday afternoon and you can get your own printable bracket here.  Using an ingenious combination of past match-play results, quality of player, recent results and spare change, I filled out my bracket thusly:

First Round:

Matthew (39) over NY Choi (1)

Stupples (43) over Pak (32)

Yoo (16) over G Park (54)

M Miyazato (17) over Sharp (50)

SH Kim (8) over Gustafson (42)

Mackenzie (61) over Icher (25)

Wie (9) over Recari (38)

Nordqvist (24) over H Kang (51)

Tseng (4) over Hart (63)

Inkster (29) over Suh (64)

Pressel (13) over Granada (62)

Hjorth (20) over SH Lee (40)

Pettersen (5) over Gulbis (49)

V Hurst (28) over Hung (45)

Feng (37) over Hull (12)

Lewis (21) over Futcher (52)

Shin (2) over M Lee (33)

Hur (31) over MH Kim (55)

Lincicome (15) over Ward (46)

Stanford (18) over Kung (36)

IK Kim (7) over Mindy Kim (58)

C Kim (26) over Lang (35)

Creamer (10) over A Song (57)

Webb (23) over Kemp (59)

Kerr (3) over Blumenherst (48)

Munoz (30) over Mozo (60)

Yang (14) over Bae (47)

JY Lee (19) over Seo (56)

A Miyazato (6) over HY Park (34)

McPherson (27) over Han (41)

I Park (11) over Prammanasudh (44)

J Kang (22) over C Choi (53)

Star-divide

Yes - the number one seed will go down.  Choi went out in the first round last year while Matthew made the quarters and Catriona has played fairly well so far this year.  You'll soon see I have her re-appearing in the quarterfinals.  Other than that biggie, I could only find three others where I felt really good about picking the underdog.  Icher is not playing well at all, Stupples has generally outplayed Pak and I just have a feeling about Feng beating Hull.

Second Round:

Matthew over Stupples

Yoo over M Miyazato

SH Kim over Mackenzie

Wie over Nordqvist

Tseng over Inkster

Pressel over Hjorth

Pettersen over V Hurst

Lewis over Feng

Shin over Hur

Stanford over Lincicome

C Kim over IK Kim

Creamer over Webb

Kerr over Munoz

Yang over JY Lee

A Miyazato over McPherson

I Park over J Kang

My only upsets here are Christina over Inky - purely a choice of match-player over one who hasn't shown well in the format - and Stanford over Lincicome - giving weight to last year's results.

Third Round:

Matthew over Yoo

Wie over SH Kim

Tseng over Pressel

Lewis over Pettersen

Stanford over Shin

Creamer over C Kim

Yang over Kerr

I Park over A Miyazato

Here is where the upsets kick in for me.  Yoo's Sybase ride finally ends at the hands of the veteran match-play artist.  Wie squeezes out Song-Hee.  Lewis hangs in long enough for the pressure to make Pettersen wilt.  Stanford over Shin was a tough call but Angela's been playing well of late.  With her now sizeable backlog of success here, Yang sends Kerr packing.  Miyazato has not been playing well and she finally meets an opponent in Round Three who is and can make her pay.

Quarterfinals:

Wie over Matthew

Tseng over Lewis

Stanford over Creamer

Yang over I Park

Semifinals:

Tseng over Wie

Yang over Stanford

Final:

Yang over Tseng

There you have it, Amy Yang's first LPGA victory.  At least, I hope that's how it plays out!  Give it a try yourself and then enter Golfweek's Match Play Challenge for a chance to play in next year's Sybase pro-am.  Good luck!

Upset special & Group of Death

It took me awhile to realize the seeds are based on the 2010 money list.
The first round matchup of JY Lee (#19) and HK Seo (#56) made me think there was some typo and the seeds have been switched. Seo is way ahead of Lee in the Rolex Rankings and on the 2011 LPGA money list.

The Whitworth bracket is the Group of Death, containing 4 players of Top 10 and 7 of the Top 20 on the 2011 money list. The group can also boast of 5 different players who have won majors.

I’m picking Wie over Lewis and Lincicome over HK Seo in the semis.
Then Wie over Lincicome in the final.

Not convinced Wie will fare as well as last year

She’s studying at Stanford this quarter, and a full load with 20 credits. In previous years she skipped the spring quarter to concentrate on golf. Given the sparse LPGA schedule the past 6-7 weeks I doubt Wie will be in peak form, although she certainly has strengths suited to match play and a good record in the format.

Wie was the least of my problems

Wendy Ward poleaxed my bracket, like George Mason & VCU put together. I went 14 of 32, so I guess I’m not going to win the Golfweek contest and be able show Paula Creamer my short game at the 2012 Sybase pro-am.
