Remember when Shinobu Moromizato was struggling on the LPGA as she accompanied fellow Okinawan rookie Ai Miyazato in their rookie seasons? Well, forget that Moromizato. Version 2.0 is now the top player on the JLPGA. Having won for the 4th time on tour this season in a tense duel with Miho Koga and Akiko Fukushima, she's now 1 good tournament away from becoming the 1st to break the 100 million yen barrier in '09.

Chie Arimura Makes It a Trio with 3 JLPGA Wins in '09

Chie Arimura was the first to drop out of the playoff that Momoko Ueda ended up winning last week on the JLPGA, but this week she got herself a wire-to-wire win. Yuko Mitsuka kept it close for the 1st 16 holes today, but finished double bogey-bogey to drop to 4th. Shinobu Moromizato closed with a 66 to snag 2nd and move to the top of the JLPGA money list, as Sakura Yokomine failed to notch a top 20 for the 2nd week in a row. It was also a disappointing week for Ai Miyazato, who finished T23 with Ji-Hee Lee (it was the first time in her last 15 events on tour that Lee finished outside the top 20). And Mi-Jeong Jeon had many chances to go low on the weekend but had to settle for 3rd place. Things are definitely heating up on the JLPGA in their run-up to their 2nd major, the Konica Minolta Cup, the middle of next month. Their 3rd, the Japan Women's Open, comes the 1st week of October. Miyazato and Ueda are likely to play both.

Huge Win for Ueda on the JLPGA

Momoko Ueda came straight from the LPGA's European Swing, where she showed flashes of brilliance but still had disappointing results by her standards, back to the JLPGA this week at the AXA Ladies. And she just beat Ji-Hee Lee and Chie Arimura in a 2-hole playoff, finishing in style with 3 birdies in her last 5 holes in regulation and a walkoff tap-in birdie for the win after hitting the stick with her approach shot. Her win brings her to #25 on the JLPGA money list; another would most likely put her in the top 10. Stay tuned--Ai Miyazato rejoins the JLPGA next week and has committed to the next 2 majors. Stay tuned!

Maybe I should have titled this, "Where in the World Are the LPGA's Best Golfers?" Many European Solheim Cuppers are chasing Amy Yang and Katherine Hull on the LET this week. Ji-Yai Shin, Momoko Ueda, and Shiho Oyama are 1 shot behind Sakura Yokomine on the JLPGA. And Mina Harigae has a chance to join the LPGA--if she can win this week on the Futures Tour, she earns their 1st-ever battlefield promotion. Plus Ai Miyazato and the entire KLPGA return to action next week. August is great for women's golf worldwide!

Chie Arimura Has Momentum Headed into Evian

Even a fog-shortened final round couldn't stop Chie Arimura from finishing at -12, 4 shots ahead of Yuko Saitoh, at the Stanley Ladies today. With her 2nd win of the season and 3rd of her career under her belt, Arimura heads into Evian with some serious momentum. She's now in a trio that's closing on Sakura Yokomine and Shinobu Moromizato (Yuko Mitsuka took the week off and Mi-Jeong Jeon faded over the final 9 today). Let's see how the JLPGA contingent--Arimura, Mitsuka, Ji-Hee Lee, Erina Hara, Eun-A Lim, and Ayako Uehara--do on the LPGA's European swing!
